Potty Training

PT and UTIs? Moms of girls, help!

For the past 3-4 days we've been working hard on having potty time at specific times of day, but DD has yet to put anything IN the potty.  Problem is, she seems to try to hold her pee for as long as it takes to A) play while naked from the waist down and then B) get a clean diaper on, where she'll almost immediately pee in it.  The other thing is she's soaked the bed almost every night this week, and once she peed enough that the diaper actually started falling apart while she was still wearing it until I went in and woke her up and found it.  (Doesn't give me a lot of confidence in the safety of diapers, and we've NEVER used the Dry Max ones, either.  Sigh.)

Yesterday and again this morning she told me, "Mama, my bottoms hurts" and put her hand on her crotch.  She doesn't have a fever, doesn't seem to scream or cry when she's peeing in her diapers (the times that I know she is, if I'm holding her or something), but I thought I noticed a funny smell yesterday, which then wasn't there this morning (I don't think).  No rash, no noticeable abnormal redness, nothing else like that, but I wonder if she's starting to get a UTI from holding her pee for that long of a time as we potty train.

Moms of girls, have you had this experience, or has your DD developed a UTI at any point in the PT process?  Thanks; I'm worried about her but I don't want to drag her into the pedi and catheterize her without good reason--it's not a pleasant process!

  • Did you ever find out if she had one?  DD is potty training now and kind of acts like it is going to hurt when she goes pee.  We're on day 4 of the 3 day potty training and she only went twice between 9am and 1pm. I do put diapers on her at naptime and bedtime and she has been wetting those.
