After a dozen cycles with some serious meds (and we're not even done yet!) I am seriously considering a prophylactic oophorectomy someday. Ovarian cancer is scary chit, and you cannot tell me that I'm not in danger of them going rogue on me. If you can even detect ovarian cancer, it's quite often too late. I'd tie my tubes as soon as we're done done, and wait 5 years or so after this crap is all done to do the oophorectomy, but I'll be in my mid-40's by that point, only a few years from menopause anyways.
Anyone thought about this? talked about it? (Dr. Oz show is talking about it as I type, but this has been on my mind for a while) I've always asked my docs about it, and they poo'poo it, but they have not been bombarding women's ovaries very long, esp like they have been for the past few years. IVF is fairly new. I bet in 5 years we'll start to see those pioneering IVF'ers come up with some weird delayed side effects. I don't wanna be one of them, these oves have betrayed me enough already ;-)
I might even consider a full hysterectomy, but that's more research for another day. (and I should add, I've had probably 30+ xrays of my spine, for scoliosis, since I was 10 years old. That also compounds my fears. Also, We have no family history of these issues that I know of.)
Re: Prophylactic ovary removal?
I don't know jack about it...so I'm the furthest thing from an expert. But I feel like you do...they're already effed up and I actually DO have a history of ovarian, breast, colon, bladder and lung cancer in my family...so I'm kinda thinking anything I can do without that could potentially grow cancer should come out...plus I have PCOS and that's a pain in my ass.
So I've wondered the same thing...plus you add into that all the fertility stuff I've done. Just seems logical to remove the problem. But I bet you get lots of "Are you crazy?!" responses. :-)
I think there would be a stronger argument if I was 28. But I'm old. They're almost shut down anyways, let's just bulldoze 'um a wee bit early!
(so I can leave the hospital and get hit by a bus. lol)
I always said I'd do a prophylactic double mastectomy if I felt my risk factors warranted it...so I say 'why the hell not' when it comes to the oophorectomy.
Ovarian cancer is nothing to mess around with...I'd do it in a heartbeat...Its not like you are going to be using them later on, KWIM?
This is exactly what I was thinking...
it's only a matter of time before I book my surgeon. my mom had ovarian cancer and I SLAMMED my ovaries with meds for 4 IVFs. even my RE said "they should go." sucky.

I hate to agree with you, if not about having it done at least about the concern, but I do.
It's just not been done that long.
Personally, at the first sign of breast cancer, at least one of my girls is coming off ASAP. And -- dildo cams notwithstanding
-- ovaries aren't something one sees every day, plus detection is often too late, so I think I'd consider that as well if I had taken heftier meds.
Sucks. But better safe than sorry IMO.

Very interesting. Smart too, IMO.
