Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

When did you start giving potentially allergic foods?

Like honey, nuts, shellfish, etc.

I plan to discuss this with my doctor at Jackson's 1 year checkup but it still isn't for a few weeks.

We have no family history of food allergies.  The only reason I am wondering now is because I had never given him chocolate (other than a tiny taste here and there) and he had a whole chocolate cupcake at daycare today for a birthday.

TIA!

  • Haven't given DS any of those things yet (although we did give him a chocolate cake for his birthday...he ate maybe two mouthfulls)

Honey I'm pretty sure they say to wait until 2 years old, not an allergy thing but if it's unpasturized it can cause infant botulism I believe.

  • We just went for it. If we were eating it, we gave her a taste. We don't have any allergies in our family though. My friend's DH is severely allergic to peanuts so they are waiting until 2y/o with their son. Other than that he eats everything. Good luck.
  • She got peanut butter a couple of weeks ago and had a honey graham cracker this weekend. Haven't had shellfish yet.
  • No honey until 2 years old (so I've heard).  We haven't given him nuts yet either.  But he has had shellfish a few times and lived.

  • our doc said we dont have to restrict anything at her 1yr appt
  • Nut(butters),whole eggs and berries were given at around 6 months. I would have given her shellfish already, but I just don't really eat it myself. I will wait with honey until 1 yr or 2, what ever the standard recommendation is.

  • We did honey and peanut butter at 1yr.

Um, clam chowder has been his fave food since um, 7 or 8 months. Embarrassed Shrimp came pretty soon thereafter. We are a seafood loving family, and we were at the beach where it's fresh, what can I say?

Um, yeah. The Bump be too crazy for pics of my kid.
  • DD has had everything now... honey I was planning on waiting until she was 2. my plan was different than that of my Mom, she didn't know DD shouldn't have any and she made PB and honey sandwiches.(14 months old)  No reaction and DD loved them!! Now we have them occasionally .

Shell fish DD has had cooked shrimp (maybe 2 months ago - 16 months old) and didn't care for them, that;s ok... more for me!

  • We were cautious because of a history of allergies, asthma and eczema in both DH's and my families (even though he and I ourselves only have one allergy between us, and it's not food ;)), both boys had eczema, and Will started reacting to things maybe a month after we started solids; he had been referred to an allergist at 10m already because he was reacting to so many different foods. Without that, I would've done honey after 12m, PB at maybe 18m and shellfish maybe around 2.

  • Around 8 months old, except honey, which I don't think he's had yet.
  • Yeah Gabby had everything (except honey which we are waiting until after 2 yrs) by the time she was 9 or 10 months old.  No food allergies on either side of the family.
