Panic attack over strollers, Q about baby wearing

So today is the first time I've delved into the wonderful world of strollers and it freaked me out.

Questions:

1. Have you picked one out yet? If not, is there a "type" you are going for?

2. I like the idea of having a "permanent" car seat and a separate stroller (ideally one that can work for infants and toddlers), but I live in fear of waking up a baby to move them from one to the other. Would the Snap n' Go be a good 2nd stroller for these scenarios?

3. I'd like to baby-wear as much as possible. Do you just pick up the baby from the car seat and put him in your wrap/sling/whatever? How feasible is this for an infant? Are there situations where you would not wear your baby?

4. Is it ridiculous to have a car seat, a stroller, a snap-n-go, AND a baby wearing device?

TIA.

  • 1. Have you picked one out yet? Yes, the City Mini

    2. I like the idea of having a "permanent" car seat and a separate stroller (ideally one that can work for infants and toddlers), but I live in fear of waking up a baby to move them from one to the other. Would the Snap n' Go be a good 2nd stroller for these scenarios? I don't like the idea of having to carry a baby to the car & get them in the seat & possibly remove them from the car seat to put in the stroller so we're going w/an infant seat & will just upgrade to a convertible seat when he/she outgrows that.

I've heard of lots of ppl buying to Snap n' Go but I've heard complaints that the carseat sits low to the ground so instead of buying a snap n go & a stroller we're just going to buy the City Mini & car seat adapter.

    3. I'd like to baby-wear as much as possible. Do you just pick up the baby from the car seat and put him in your wrap/sling/whatever? How feasible is this for an infant? Are there situations where you would not wear your baby? I would like to wear my baby a lot also, but living in the south when it's 90*, baby wearing will probably not work for me During the summer. Also, I'm probably prefer not to wear the baby when I go shopping b/c how would you go about trying clothes on?

    4. Is it ridiculous to have a car seat, a stroller, a snap-n-go, AND a baby wearing device? Personally, I would skip the snap 'n go & just buy a stroller than can work w/your car seat w/an adapter.

  • I am a super huge fan of strollers.  I joke that long after my babes out grow the stroller, I'm still going to run errands with it.  There's a place to put your bags, hang your purse and set your drink!!!  It's lovely.

    1.  I am hoping for the double city mini- I say hoping because it's not cheap.

    2.  Popping the infant carseat out of the base and putting it into the stroller is super easy.  You don't have to physically move the baby at all, and that could be handy when you want to keep them sleeping.  If you have a travel system stroller, I think you need to use the infant carseat so the baby fits well- I don't think baby infants can go in the big seat of a real stroller.

    3.  While I plan to baby wear more this time than last, I will most definitely be using a stroller.  I think I'm opposite than you in that I'm a little afraid to baby wear and not have my stroller.  What happens if I get tired of carrying the baby or need a break?  It'll have to be trial and error for me.  When you're ready to get the babe out of the car seat, just sit in the back seat with them and do your wrap or carrier.

    4.  Not ridiculous at all to have options and variety.  You don't always want to carry the baby or always put the baby in the stroller.  Maybe get a stroller travel system (where the infant seat fits into the stroller, then that stroller turns into the big kid stroller) and a wearing device.

    Hope this helps!!

  • We are going with the snap n' go that way the baby doesn't have to be moved while sleeping. We already have a carseat and they don't have a stroller that matches so the snap n' go is the best for us. We will also pick up a light weight stroller for when the baby is older. Pick up a copy of baby bargains... very helpful! Oh, and don't forget to go to the baby store and test drive them!

  • 1. We picked the Graco Quattro Tour Travel System. We chose it after trying out a bunch of different brands. We like the ratings, the ease that it works. The stroller is a bit on the heavy side but not TOO heavy

    2. We prefer the idea of taking the whole car seat out for travel and snapping it onto the stroller especially if the baby is sleeping or if we are just going a short distance.

    3. we will be wearing the baby but I do predict there will be many times that the stroller will be easier especially in toddler years. Again when I don't want to wake an infant as well.

  • GenaBoBena... Where are you buying a City Mini car seat adapter? I didn't know this existed.  So it converts the normal stroller to a "travel" system? But you can still use it as a stroller without the car seat?  Were you able to "test drive" this somewhere? It seems to be the answer to my prayers.

  • 1.  We are going with a snap-n- go this time.  Weight of a stroller is very inportant to me and this seemed like the lightest option.  And it's something new for us since these weren't available last time we bought a stroller.

2.Speaking from the experience of driving a crying baby around to get them to sleep, I like carrier car seats.  I hate the idea of waking a sleeping baby to get them out.  And it always seems like they fall asleep just as you arrive at your destination.  We will switch to a convertible seat once he/she is older and on some type of sleep schedule.

    3.   I have no experience with baby wearing, once again it was just becoming something people did last time I had a baby.  But I have the same concern about the heat.   But I will probably get some type of system to use some times.  I've been looking at the Moby wrap since it will fit me and my husband.

I know.  We have been out shopping so many times since my kids grew out of them and I though "this would be easier if I had a stroller".  I wondered if people would look at me strange just pushing one loaded with shopping bags around.

  • The only stroller I have is a BOB Revolution which thus far has only been used for running.  I wear kiddo everywhere (unless he walks once he started walking).

I never had trouble putting kiddo in a wrap from the car seat or vice versa - if he was asleep, he just went back to sleep after I moved him.  He was far more likely to stay asleep worn.

I can't think of a single situation aside from running in which I'd need a stroller and wouldn't babywear.  I may take a stroller on day trips when I'm by myself once I have two kids but I never needed it with kiddo (I'm probably in a minority on that though!).

I'm not a fan of strollers that use the car seat or leaving kiddo in the car seat for extended periods of time.  There is research that shows being in a car seat for extended periods of time can compromise a newborn's O2 levels.  I think a stroller with a bassinet type feature is the way to go for newborns if you want a stroller.

I'm doing the same thing - I got my (Chicco) adapter from Buy Buy Baby. They make one now for chicco car seats & "all" other car seats. My cousin was able to have the BBBaby employee try it out for her & she said it was very easy to use. I'm going to have our BBBaby peeps do the same thing for us (cousin and I leave in different states).

    HTH!

  • I'm pretty sure we're going to get the Maclaren Triumph (or something similar).  I hate, hate, HATE the giant strollers that are so en vogue these days.  I want one that folds as small as possible and doesn't draw attention.

ETA: I'll be doing a ton of baby wearing, and I'm not that afraid of waking up a sleeping baby.  I'm of the general opinion that leaving a baby in a carseat all the time is bad for them.  We're getting a Britax convertible from the start, since I feel it's safer than an infant seat.  If the kid wakes up when moved from seat to stroller or baby carrier . . . oh well.

Yep, w/the adapter you can use the City Mini as a travel system. I know they sell the adapter at BRU (have it on my registry but I believe you can only buy online) & I believe Amazon, USA Baby & Buy Buy Baby sell them as well. One of my bosses has the City Mini (& used it w/their car seat w/the adapter) so I was able to "test drive" it so to speak & it was amazing, lightweight & easy to maneuver one handed & folds up effortlessly.

I have a BOB, a travel system, and an umbrella stroller.  If I had to do it again I wouldn't do the travel system.  It's too bulky.  My DH and I run a lot so the BOB is good...and there are times where a stroller is better but an umbrella one with the back all the way down can work for an infant too.

    3. I'd like to baby-wear as much as possible. Do you just pick up the baby from the car seat and put him in your wrap/sling/whatever? How feasible is this for an infant? Are there situations where you would not wear your baby?

With the right sling this works pretty well.  I had a ring sling while they were infants.  It is really comfy so while they might fuss during the transfer they quiet down really fast.  The only time I wouldn't use it would be for long walks (it can get tiring eventually) or trips to the mall where I might want to try stuff on.

    TIA.

  • I am still trying to warp my head around all this as well.  I like the Uppa Baby Vista.  I "think" you get the car seat adapter so you can use the car seat when the baby is little and when asleep.  I don't know all about this yet.  If you get the car seat adapter then there is no need for a snap and go, right?

  • We will be getting the city mini. I've heard that the adapter for the infant seat is easier to use than the snap n go (easier to maneuver and the baby sits closer to you) so I think that's what we will be doing. Probably with the Graco snugride or Chicco keyfit.

  • I'm pretty sure that here in Canada (or in BC at least) if you don't have an infant car seat you can't take baby home.

We got a travel system because I like the idea of not having to wake baby up to move them.. although if this one is anything like my nieces were that won't be an issue lol.

  • I am also finding the stroller/car seat situation extremely overwhelming.

After some initial research online-- we have yet to go try anything out which will be the key-- I think we'll go with:

    - infant car seat w/ snap n go stoller

    - BOB Revolution stroller-- debating here if she should get the infant car seat adaptor for this too since we both do a lot of jogging.

As for baby wearing, this is definitely something that intrigues me.  I would definitely like to try it and have heard great things about the Ergo.

This is a really good point for people not considering an infant seat to consider - at our hospital you can't just carry the baby out to your car.  They have to be strapped into a car seat and held on your lap as they wheel you out to your car in a wheel chair.  No exceptions.  If you have a Britax or other convertible, depending on your birth place's policy, you would have to uninstall the seat then reinstall it once you are discharged.  Just something to check into!

FWIW, I am a huge proponent of getting a good infant carrier (I have adored my Graco Snugride) and a snap n go and then some type of baby wearing device (I love my Moby and my Beco).  This will get you through the first 6 months or so and will give you lots of time to figure out what kinds of outings you do the most and see other parents out and about and scope out their strollers and decide what's best for you.  Many people buy the stroller they think or hear is "the best" and get it, then it turns out it isn't the best fit for their particular needs or likes.

  • Thanks so much for all the advice!

I've definitely narrowed down my options.

I'm either going with a snap and go system for the first 6months then figuring it out,  or a city mini with the car seat attachment....

    At least I think.

    haha

  • I'm on my 3rd and still get overwhelmed by all the choices out there. I have a variety of carriers, wraps and slings. I also love having a stroller with that I can put bucket car seat in while baby is sleeping, and I always have something so I can carry baby once awake. I watch a friend's baby 2 days a week and she has the mini city. I LOVE it. I wish I had gotten that one DS. It turns on a dime with one hand and folds with one hand. I can fold it and put in trunk while holding her baby. I think she has the mini city select? I would highly recommend it.

  • 1. My stroller was given to us as a hand me down. I later ended up getting a jogger and a basic umbrella stroller for $15 or so bucks. We use the umbrella stroller all the time now since it's just so easy and light.

    2. I was most comfortable keeping DS in his infant seat for a long as possible. While I have no experience with an infant in a larger carseat that is meant to be used from infancy to toddlerhood I like the way DS just seems so safely protected in a seat that seemed to fit his body so much better. Even in the infant seat I was never able to remove the seat to the snap n go without waking him up, he has always been a very light sleeper.

    3. I would just pick him up out of the seat and put him into the sling. Sometimes when he was an infant I would throw the sling into the basket of the stroller and snap in the infant seat. There are a number of times when I wouldn't want to wear him - if I was planning on trying on clothes or having a ton of bags with me, if he was fussy that day and nothing seemed to please him or even once he was more alert and wanted to people watch but wasn't old enough to face out - times like that.

    4. I have car seats in every car and my mom's car, multiple strollers for all sorts of terrain, had a snap n go and multiple baby wearing devices. Some were hand me downs, some were found on craigslist  some were purchased with coupons, so I didn't pay full price for anything but the seats and my Ergo.

  • My two cents!!!

    1. Have you picked one out yet? If not, is there a "type" you are going for? We used the City Mini w/ adapter for a Sungride35

    2. I like the idea of having a "permanent" car seat and a separate stroller (ideally one that can work for infants and toddlers), but I live in fear of waking up a baby to move them from one to the other. Would the Snap n' Go be a good 2nd stroller for these scenarios? Also, consider standing in the rain, snow, heat, etc getting baby back in the seat- you're going to be the one with your a$$ hanging out into the parking lot! When they're young and sleeping pretty much full time the seat is also handy from bringing them into the restaurant, to house, etc.

    3. I'd like to baby-wear as much as possible. Do you just pick up the baby from the car seat and put him in your wrap/sling/whatever? How feasible is this for an infant? Are there situations where you would not wear your baby? Depends on where you're going- some places it's not handy to babywear IMO. I have moved her from a seat to a sling though, and she loved being in her sling so much that the temporary stirring made it worth it most of the time.

    4. Is it ridiculous to have a car seat, a stroller, a snap-n-go, AND a baby wearing device? I had a carseat, stroller and a wrap- you need to get the items you need to make your situation work.
