Icy Hot?

Is using products like Icy/Hot or Bengay allowed during pregnancy? I used these products often pre-pregnancy for aches and pains and am just remembering how great they were! It would be WONDERFUL to be able to use them now... Anyone know?

Re: Icy Hot?

  • I'm pretty sure they're on the "no" list. I've been tempted, though. I try to alternate heat packs and ice packs when I'm feeling the pain.

  • I would check with your OB.  At my baby class, we were told that Icy Hot was fine to use by the 3rd tri.

  • I think you're supposed to avoid them.  Here's the quote from medicinenet which has all of the class information on medicines, etc.  I bolded the pregnancy part for you.

PRECAUTIONS: Before using this product, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to menthol or methyl salicylate; or to aspirin or other salicylates (e.g., salsalate); or if you have any other allergies. If you have any of the following health problems, consult your doctor or pharmacist before using this product: asthma, injured/irritated skin in the affected area, growths in the nose (nasal polyps). Some products should not be used on children younger than 12 years without a doctor's advice. Check the label carefully before using on children between 2 and 12 years old. Do not use on children younger than 2 years.During the first 6 months of pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. It is not recommended for use during the last 3 months of pregnancy due to possible harm to the unborn baby and problems with normal labor/delivery. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known whether this product passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

  • I'm not sure about IcyHot or Bengay, but I asked my OB about Vicks VapoRub and she said it was fine while pregnant just not to use it while breastfeeding because if you have it on your chest it can get in the baby's mouth. I would think IcyHot, Bengay, and Vicks are kind of in the same category, but I'd definitely ask your OB.

I hadn't thought of it, but some IcyHot on my lower back would feel AMAZING right now. I guess for tonight I'll stick to a heating pack.

  • my doc said it was totally fine, I've been using the target brand of bengay for a few months it's the only thing to distract me from my back/rib pain.
