2nd timers - A ?

Are braxton hicks contractions more frequent the 2nd time around? I've been having a ton since about 28 weeks and I'm starting to think some of them are the real thing (they're getting painful). I don't remember having this many the 1st time...

Re: 2nd timers - A ?

  • For me it's the opposite. I had them CONSTANTLY from about 26 weeks on with DD. I have yet to have one this time around? Sorry that's not a real answer to your question, though.

  • I mentioned this to my Dr. He said that it is absolutely normal for the uterus to be more "excited" and "anxious" the second time around, since it knows what it's doing now. I found this answer pretty strange, but he didn't seem concerned. I also told him that I am having a mix of BH and the real things. Again, he says totally normal. Hope it doesn't mean #2 will come sooner though, since #1 was 36 weeks. Interested to see what others say!

This is what my MW said as well, but if they hurt, are time-table-able, increasing, etc (so I think they are the real thing) to get them checked out. I've been having a fair few BH, esp in the heat of summer (which I dont' remember AT ALL last time), but nothing really painful, like a proper contraction.

  • My Googling & my baby books tell me it is more common the 2nd time around. I only remember having BH with DS a couple of times, & it was towards the very end of my pregnancy. This time around I definitely have themmore frequently, & while they're not ever really painful, they do make me cringe every now & then.

  • This has been true for me.  They started later in the pregnancy this time, though.  I have been having a lot of BH and just in the last week started having some painful ones.  Not enough to concern me, but just get my attention and make me take it easy.  Overall, I would say that everything has been more intense this time around.

  • I asked my MW because I was having a couple painful contractions and she says that BH can be more painful the second time around and it's normal.
