NBR: Mac or PC?

Our current Dell laptop is on its last legs so we are in the market for a new laptop.  We have always had pc's but lately we have been thinking about getting a mac since we have so many pictures and musics.

What are people using and which do you like better?

  • I have a Toshiba Laptop, but keep all music and photos on an external hard drive (I believe we have a 1TB). I don't understand the hype about macs, way too overpriced.

  • I'm a PC.

I don't fall for all the MAC-hype.  And I refuse to pay 2k for a laptop.

  • Oh, and all the software I already own and am familiar with is for the PC.

  • I have been creating websites on PCs since I was 14 years old, was a computer science minor using only PCs in college, I use a Mac and a PC at work, and my DH is an enterprise network manager for PCs and Macs.  We both dislike Macs and much prefer PCs, but I think we're in the minority.  We just have so much experience with PCs and are more clumsy on a Mac.  To me it's like learning a new language but only using it enough to feel like you don't know what you're doing all the time.

I think if we had started out on Macs we might like them better, but have no desire to make a complete switch.  Smile

  • For those of you who have macs, do you like them better than a pc?  Why?

  • I use a PC at work and like it, but run a Mac at home.  Although you can still get a virus on a Mac, it's few and far between as most viruses/malware are generated to attack a Windows based environment. So for that reason and for others (i like some of the apps they have and it syncs nicely with other apple products we have). It is spendy and it was an adjustment to get through in the beginning, but i love how you don't have a big clunky tower for our IMac, since it's all built in the monitor.

  • i have been a mac since the 80's. but work on both at work, so am literate in both. I prefer the mac. By the way, you can run pc programs on a mac. -not ideal for programs like MS office -it's worth purchasing the mac version, and Office 2010 is coming out so you probably want to upgrade anyway. But if it's more specialized software, it's worth running the pc on the mac.

and macs are "overpriced" because traditionally apple has done all the R&D, then the PCs use and sell the same technology a couple years later. case in point...ipod and ipad. PC tablets are due to launch this year after the technology has already been deleloped and launched by apple. Apple hast to pay for for their development somehow!!!

  • I do not believe there is "hype" around the prices of macs.  They are well worth the money.  I will NEVER own a pc.

  • I've had macs for like 10 years now. I absolutely would never go back to a pc. I switched when I was majoring in graphic design and I am so used to them now.
  • Macs are 100% worth the money. My mom(a computer engineer) has had the same eMac since 2003 and it works like it's brand new---how many pc owners can say the same that haven't shelled out hundreds of dollars to fix their pc? They are all around a more reliable machine, they are extremely user friendly--if you don't know how to use it, simply sign up for a quick class at the apple store and they will tell you everything you need to know. I could seriously rave about Apple products for hours. Ditto on the PP who said you can run windows on a mac if you need it, we do it sometimes and it runs smoothy every time.

Our family is a bunch of apple junkies, collectively we have had or currently own: am emac, imac,  macbook pro, ibook,  original iphone, 2 iphone 3gS, 3 iphone 4, an iPad, and have all had a bunch of ipods.

And my two cents on people who talk about the "hype" around Apple products: when was the last time you have ever seen customers line up around a building over a pc product? hmm...never. lol :)

I agree with this. I don't this there is "hype" around the mac. DH bought me a mac book when my boys were born and I LOVE IT! Seriously, I tell my DH all the time that I never thought I could really love a computer, but I LOVE my mac book.  Its just so easy to use. The track pad is the best. It has never given me problem. I love iphoto. I love that I can just close it and it goes to sleep and then I just open it and it almost immediately resumes where you were. I was always scared of macs because I was so used to PCs, but I'm telling you, I'll never own a PC (esp a laptop) again.

  • Here's why i like my mac:

you turn it on and it works. it is so intuitive and easy and there aren't 800 steps you have to go through to do anything.

example: my sister visited and brought her macbook. She hooked into our (wireless, but you can be wireless on a pc) and needed to print.she hit the print button and a dialogue box popped up asking if she'd like to use our printer. she clicked "Yes", print job successful. Nothing to install, no blue screen of death.

It's the way computers should work.

Husband has a mac pro with a bunch of blahblahblah (he's a software architect) and he runs windows through it when he needs to, but he prefers coding on the mac.

I will never own a PC - they're bulky, they're inconsistent, they're a step behind on the curve, and their User Interface is the least intuitive thing I have ever encountered.

If the sticker price cows you, bur a refurb (online.) Husband's macpro is and we have not had a single issue.

  • Mac at home. PC at work. I'm proficient on both and can do some tinkering inside. But I've been a Mac girl since the 80s when we had Apple ][es in elementary school and prefer them.
  • If we could afford a Mac, we would have one.
