What do you spend on groceries each month?

The money posts below got me wondering. This includes everything you buy at the grocery store whether it be toiletries, diapers, alcohol etc. I realized a few months ago that we were spending an truely insane amount on groceries, I have reduced it a lot with coupons, bargian hunting etc, but it blows my mind to see that some people only spend $400 a month? Is that really the norm? If so I need serious lessons on grocery shopping!

Re: What do you spend on groceries each month?

  • We generally spend between $300 & $400, usually closer to the $300 mark unless we are having a dinner party or a party of another sort that would require us to buy a bit more.

  • We spend $400 or less on groceries, toiletries/health/beauty, diapers/wipes, and household/cleaning. We use a ton of coupons, buy produce by season, stock up, shop sales, etc.
  • Well I buy certain groceries at one store, others at another - and toiletries I buy from Sam's (wholesale - bulk).  I shop weekly now since DS eats fresh fruits and goes through milk like crazy.  One week I'll buy just produce, dairy and any items I need for that week.  The following week I'll do a big shop where I get meat, produce, dairy, and boxed/canned goods.

I check the ads and clip coupons and buy the cheapest items/week.  I plan our weekly meals around the ads/coupons.   Example: if one week ground beef is on sale I will stock up and freeze lots.  Same thing with frozen veggies - I buy tons when they're 10 for $10.  We have a deep freeze that I use for that kind of stuff.

I would say on average I spend $500/month on groceries/toiletries.  We only buy alcohol if we're at a winery or out to eat on special occassions.

  • Way too freakin much.  We are sitting at around $800 including diapers, wipes, personal hair products, tp/paper towels, cleaning products.

I have just come to realize that we need to cut back drastically.  It's just not in our budget to spend like this.

  • We spend around 300 to 450 a month. I just keep my eye out for sales and I bring a list with me of what I will be making.

EEK!  We are closer to this amount too. I blame it partly on me being gluten intolerant, all my "special" food is fricking expensive!  But still, a ridiculous amount to be spending, I'm sure there are some places we could cut back...

  • You guys this is really bad! I spend like $800 a month on groceries if its a GOOD month. I am embarassed to say what a bad month looks like. That does include diapers, toiletries etc. but I still feel like I am not doing good at all. I am kind of picky and do buy some things organic which does cost more, but not THAT much more.

Give me some tips! I do meal plan and have tried coupons, but they seem to only save me $10 max per trip. Maybe I need to start stocking up and freezing?

  • We spend about $400 a month on food, diapers, wipes, toiletries, etc. But... DH is out of town for work about half the time and we still spend that much! He eats/drink expensive stuff though like zone bars, muscle milk, protein shakes, etc. It really adds up!
  • I spend about $300, all included (diapers, etc.) mostly because that is all the money we have!  I use  A LOT of coupons and shop sales.
  • At the most we spend $300...BUT we eat out way too much.  We also don't drink alcohol and drink very little soda.  If we ate at home like we should I'd say we would spend about $400 a month.  That includes baby food, but doesn't include diapers and wipes (which we buy at Target).
  • About $300 on groceries, $50 on toiletries, and $50 on alcohol.

I dont buy diapers or wipes (cloth).

  • we spend a ton too. probably between $400-$500. we don't eat out much though. and i also use coupons and we get a discount b/c DH is a student.

ETA: that does not include diapers. and LO is still BFing, so that also doesn't include whole milk. yet another reason to keep nursing!

  • we spend around $400/month on groceries....it's Target that kills us.  I'd be surprised if we spend any less than $500/month there.
  • I thought I was spending what the average American family spent but I guess not. We spend on avg $1000 a month for a family of 5. We buy all organic and I know thats a little price hike but maybe its much more than I thought! I'm tempted to look at my last receipt and see whats up.

  • We spend $300-400/month.  I try to shop at the military commissary if I'm buying a lot though, so that saves a ton.  I stock up when there are sales and use coupons if I can find any.

  • $600 which includes everything...but that is still ridiculous to me...I need to get better about coupons and shopping the sales...ugh.
  • We spend about $500 a month. That's including baby supplies and toiletries. Sometimes we may spend $50-$100 extra depending on how hungry we are that month (lol) or if we run out of a lot of things at once. And we've been getting better about eating good, home-cooked things that make us fuller longer so we don't just scarf snacks all the time. And since DD is JUST now getting her first tooth, she's starting to be able to eat more things that we are.

We also don't eat out much at all anymore, that has saved a ton.

  • We spend $100/week on groceries/toiletries. We don't really buy any alcohol. I usually plan our meals on Saturday and grocery shop on Sunday. If it weren't for coupons, we would spend $150/week. That is usually how much we save.

  • Well, I buy diapers and toiletries separately--mostly at Rite Aid, some diapers on Amazon when they have a smokin' deal. I average about $60-70/week at the grocery store and probably an average of $50-60/month at Rite Aid/Amazon for diapers and wipes for two, all our toiletries, paper towels, TP, OTC meds, etc. Then about another $15/month for special gluten-free foods I order for Will off of Amazon (bread, cereal, pasta, baking mixes). So all told, maybe $330-350/month for all of it for two adults and two toddlers.
