what to ask my ob/gyn

howdy! it's been forever since i've been on here.

i am going to my ob/gyn next week for my annual and to talk about my DH and i wanting to start trying to get pregnant in the spring. i'm wondering if there's anything i should bring up with my doctor, ask or need to know about starting this process.

Re: what to ask my ob/gyn

  • I asked about TTC at an annual and was just told to start taking prenatals and to let them know if we were unsuccessful after 8-12months. Unless you have preexisting conditions that might interfere with getting PG, I think they pretty much just say 'go for it!' at first.

    Good luck, though!!

  • my OB went ahead and ran the first panel of fertility blood work... just to give us an idea if there was something crazy off.  Good thing she did or we would have wasted 8-12 months of being unsuccessful.

  • I had a similar experience as BeckO.  The only thing I would add is if you are taking any medicines regularly you may want to ask if they are ok to take while TTC.  I have migraines and was taking some pretty strong medicines and they were able to give me some advice about what to discontinue and some alternatives.  Good luck!

  • thanks for the help - especially with the migraine meds. i never would have thought of that while TTC.

I had to stop my daily preventative completely (topamax).  To treat my migraines, I basically ended up with 2 prescriptions.  I could take my regular migraine med (treximet) the first 2 weeks of my cycle when I knew I wasn't pregnant and then take a safer med (hydrocodone) during the 2 week wait. Once I got my BFP I switched only to hydrocodone.    I hope that makes sense.

  • do you have pretty regular cycles?  if so, I'm assuming they'd make you wait 8-ish months, like pp mentioned.  ask about charting if you have questions about that as well.

if you don't, ask what the next steps would be.

    GL!

  • mine was pretty similar - she said give it 6 months and if nothing happened by then, we would talk about things. i believe her quote was "have fun!"
