Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

12 month stats - please come in if your baby is wee!

She was 18 lb even and 28.5 inches, which was 10% for weight and 45% for height. At 9 months she was 16% for weight and 15% for height (I think the nurse screwed up her height b/c it looked wonky in her growth chart).

I asked the pedi if her weight is a problem and he said not at all - he'd be more concerned if she were overweight. Still. So tiny! However, she drank six ounces of milk immediately afterward (she was too excited b/c she was at the doctor to drink her morning bottle, but after her hematocrit toe poke she was upset and soothed herself with the bottle), so I'm sure those six ounces would have bumped up her percentile a little bit.

If your baby is small, what if anything do your doctors say about it?

  • DS has always been a skinny thing - usually around 10th percentile for weight and 50th for height.  The doctor is not worried at all.  I think it would only be worrisome if she was 60th percentile and then dropped to 10th.

  • Nothing generally unless your DD is sharply falling on the curve over time. Our DD was 18 lbs 28 inches at her 1 year and she's perfectly fine-- she's just hit 22 lbs. at her 18 month appt and the Dr. is very happy with her progress. H and I are pretty small people so it's to be expected.
  • We just had our 1 year visit today and My DD is 17 lbs 8 oz (4%) and 28.5 (29%). She was 15 lbs 8 oz (3%) and 27.5 at her 9 months.  My doctor wasn't concerned at all and said she was doing wonderful.

  • Kaitlyn was 20lbs 5oz (37th), 29 3/4" (96th).  She's long and lean...takes after her dad (she looks almost identical to his baby pictures).  The Dr. didn't say anything so I figure she's fine.  Her hair and nails grow fast, skin is healthy, eyes are clear, and is never sick so I'm not concerned.
  • DS was born 5lb14oz, was a BIG gainer the first 6 months (the docs were always incredulous that he was EBF at that time) and made to about 22%, but as soon as the crawling/walking started, he has dropped like a rock.

Our pedi is awesome...she can tell that he is superactive and thinks that he is incredibly smart and ahead in motor and speech skills, so b/c of that she gives us lots of tips (fattier yogurt, add butter to meals, no juice, try pediasure instead of formula, high fat and protein foods, etc) but has not yet recommended any specialist visits even though he is "off the charts". He is just under 18 lbs. He had gained almost half a pound from 12-13 months, but his ear infections (and subsequent antibiotic courses) have given him lots of diarrhea and caused him to pretty much stay the same in the last month.

At the 12 month visit, she said we could meet with a ped. nutritionist if we needed more ideas, but she doesn't think yet anything is wrong...just that he burns every calorie he takes in.

Um, yeah. The Bump be too crazy for pics of my kid.
  • DS has been off the charts for quite some time now because he's so small (18.7 lbs at 15 mos).  She's not concerned because he's hitting every other milestone, if not exceeding them, and he's growing at a pace that appears normal for him based on his chart.  And his head and height are within normal ranges.
  • DD was 19.5 lbs at her 15 months and I'm not worried one bit. Her weight gain has been steady and she eats just fine. The pedi mentioned her weight at her 12 month appt and told me if I was concerned I could take her in to weigh her more frequently. I told him I was fine and he did not bring it up at all at her 15 month check up.
  • my DS is also 18 lbs, our pedi said she isn't too concerned because she knows I was small growing up (she was my pedi too) and my DH is tall and thin. She did say she wants me to bump up his calories and see if that helps. She recommended starting him on whole milk and if that digested well then to add a scoop of powdered milk, she said that will up his calorie intake without having to pump him full of milk constantly.

That's odd - I wonder why they'd tell me that she was 45% at 28.5" but tell you 29% for the same height . . . different charts?

  • I guess he's considered wee.....21lbs (25th) and 29 3/4 (50th) at 12 mos. He was 6lbs 11ozs when he was born so he gained quite a bit in a year, but he's still small.

We went to the pumpkin patch with my girlfriend and her DS who is 8 mos and 24lbs. The pics are hilarious. J looks like this little munchkin compared to the other little boy and he's 5 mos older.

  • DD was 17lbs 14oz at her 12 month, which put her in teh 8th percentile. But she was 50% for height (I think she was 29in, but don't remember). The pedi said we are just going to monitor her weight to make sure she doesn't continue dropping %wise.  We also have the additional challenge of her dairy allergy, so a lot of the higher fat and calorie foods are on the no-no list. DH and I are pretty petite, so I really don't expect her to be a giant. I think if she is still on the low end of the chart, I may request a pedi nutritionist to help with non-dairy meal planning.

  • DD had pretty much the same stats at her 12 mo. appt. Our pedi isn't worried at all; she's always been on the smaller side and her percentiles have held pretty steady at 15-25% for height, 5-10% for weight. She was completely average at birth, and has had tiny percentiles each appt after. She's just small!

  • DD was 16lbs 6oz for her 12m appt. She has always been tiny from about 4m and on and our pedi has never been worried about it. He said the same thing as your pedi about preferring skinny to overweight. She is perfectly healthy and has actually gone up to the 10-15%tile in weight since starting whole milk, prior to that she was BFed and was <5%tile.  I think it also depends on who you see, we have seen other pedi's if ours wasn't available and have had one lady in particular make a stink about her size and totally ignore the fact that I am 5'2" and very tiny myself...sometimes its just genetics.

  • DS was 15% for weight and 16% for height.  Pedi referred us to a specialist because he is concerned about DS's continuing decline in growth.  DS dropped from 94% in weight to 15% over the past 8 months and will probably keep falling because he doesn't eat enough to grow.  Hopefully we'll figure out what the issue is soon or at least be able to get DS to eat more. It is stressing me out.

I thought that was odd too... I've noticed it before with other people though. They must use different charts or something to figure out the percentages.
