Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

what was your kiddo doing at 12 months?

M had her 12 month check up yesterday. & the pedi was asking me all the usual milestone questions. The main ones she asked is what words does she say & when I told her she said, "I want to see her saying more at 15 months." & can she walk? No. I want to see her walking at 15 months. I'm not sure if she's concerned of lack of words & walking or if she's just saying she wants her doing that at next appt. M says: mom, dad, hi, bye, hey, buh buh, and yay. She waves, claps, gives high fives, gives kisses, "snaps" her tongue, and shakes her head yes/no. She crawls (fast!), cruises, and can stand without support. & she has taken a few steps unassisted but sits down when she realizes nobody has ahold of her. What was your kiddo doing at 12 months? & does anyone know a website that would show the normal ranges? Thanks.

  • checkout Babycenter for milestone ranges. They have some great charts about what kids can/should be doing at different ages.

As far as what your LO can do, it really all sounds normal. I don't know why that pedi is stressing you out!! DD is one today. She has been walking for months but she only says one word (hi). They develop at different rates and focus on one thing at a time.

  • DD was saying a similar amount of words. She was only crawling and cruising then-she did not start standing unassisted until she was 14mo. and didn't start walking until right before she turned 16mo.

IMO your DD is doing great language-wise, and if she's not walking by 15mo. no big deal. I think it's kind of crappy for your pedi to expect that and have you "stress" about it between now and then-since plenty of kids don't walk until then or later and they're perfectly fine. Walking by 18mo. is a more realistic expectation.

  • I think what you're saying sounds completely normal. Sadie (birthday 10/24)says a few more words than that, but she doesn't nod yes yet and she doesn't high five (I'm working on that one!) She's walking but she was an early walker. I didn't walk until 16 months myself so I think your baby is fine! Smile

  • That sounds like my DD at 12 months.  I wouldn't worry at all.  DD didn't walk until 13 months and had a few more words but not many more.

  • Your LO sounds just like mine and I'm not concerned and neither is my pedi.  I also read that the age range for walking is any where from 9-18 months so you have plenty of time!

  • Honestly, I think your pedi is being a bit alarmist.  Your DD has PLENTY of words for a 12 month old.  In fact, ZERO words would also be fine.  She already has plenty of words for a 15 month old, too.  She's ahead in talking, I think.

As for the walking, it is 100% normal not to be walking at 12 months, or even by 15.  My kids walked at 18 months and 13.5 months and my pedi was not concerned with either one.

I'd be annoyed if my pedi was stressing me out about walking and talking at the 12 month appt if my kid was doing all the stuff yours is doing.  I would not worry AT ALL.

  • I don't think it's ok for her to say "I want her walking by 15 months"...that would piss me off.  I've heard that doctors start a physical therapy referral at 18 months if they are not walking.
  • DD talked early but was not walking at 12 months (other than a few steps at a time). She was standing and walking along furniture (or walking with a doll carriage). She was just about 13 months when all of a sudden she walked from the kitchen to the dinning room. She never looked back.

I don't remember what words she said by 12 months but I have written down that by 11 months she was saying "hi, bye, mommy, daddy, doggy, tree, hot" and she was making animal sounds (dog, cow, snake, monkey, elephant).

Our pedi never asked us about talking and I thought it was sort of strange. I really think kids do things on their own time. There is a girl at DD's daycare that is 16 months and doesn't speak yet. She doesn't have a problem with interacting with the other kids she just doesn't have "words" yet. Is your pedi really that concerned?

Ditto the suggestion of Babycenter for handy milestone charts. Your LO sounds like she's doing fine!

    Alex at 12m:

    * Had JUST started pulling up, cruising and crawling on all fours all in the two weeks before turning 1.

    * Was babbling plenty but did not start talking till 1 week before his 15m appt  and then learned 3 words in that week (and had 50 words by 18m so no worries).

    Will at 12m:

    * Was a super-speedy crawler and cruiser. Could stand unassisted and would occasionally take a step or two.

    * Same as Alex with talking, though in that week before his 15m appt, he went from 0 to 6 words all in one week. :)

Our pedi was never concerned about their development.

  • DD was about the same physically but was saying less at that point. She says more now but one pedi I saw at her 12m appt made it seem like a huge deal that she wasn't walking and said we need to check that at 14m because "most" babies walk at 14m. I took her in and she saw someone else (by my request) and they weren't worried at all and said 18m is more when you would start to keep an eye on things.

  • Oh yeah, I just remembered that when I was chatting with the pedi, he said that as long as babies are babbling by 12 months he doesn't worry at all!

  • Sounds like she has a crap load of words. My DS started walking a week before his birthday but at almost 16 months he doesn't have any words.
