NTR: talk to me about crossover vehicles

We are looking at the Murano, Edge and Mazda - my husband wants to consider Kia and Hyundai too, but I'm not sure. Any advice or recommendations based on experience?

Re: NTR: talk to me about crossover vehicles

  • I can't talk about the crossovers themselves, but I can tell you that Kia and especially Hyundai are becoming more and more well received in the auto community all the time.

We recently had to rent a car b/c my MAZDA was in the shop (after leaving us stranded 150 miles from home) and got a Hyundai Sonata...it had to much more leg and trunk room than my Mazda sedan that we started wondering if maybe instead of an SUV/crossover, we would actually consider a sedan instead. We LOVED the Sonata, and you can't beat the warranty and price comparison to Toyota/Honda/Nissan.

Um, yeah. The Bump be too crazy for pics of my kid.

  • the murano is fabulous - my gf has one and loves it...it was out of our price range tho...we have the dodge journey...we have plenty of room with the two girls and it is comfy and pretty stylish...my only complaint is the gas mileage isn't as good as I was expecting...but then nothing that size can compare to my 4 cylinder saturn coupe...
  • I drive a Kia Rondo and LOVE it! DH researched cars for a full year before getting this. It was perfect for our needs and price range. The Kias have really come a long way ITO reliability and customer reviews. They still don't have the price of a Honda or Toyota because they don't have the big name but they are excellent quality and offer a 5-year or 60,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty. I also like that it has a good amount of space for two kids but isn't too big; it's more maneuverable and better gas mileage than a minivan or SUV.

  • We have a 2007 Ford Edge. We have had it since March, and I love it! It has a lot of leg room for the back seats and isn't super narrow in back which is great for carseats (I have 3 carseats in back right now, 1 RF Radian, 1 Scenera RF in middle and 1 Radian FF). I don't like driving SUVs but I really like the Edge because it doesn't feel like I'm up too high, it's just the right size. Plenty of space in the back too. Back seats fold forward flat. Mine also has an mp3 jack (which a lot of cars do now) which I love. The seats are SUPER comfortable too. We test drove a Ford Escape beforehand and the back was way to small/narrow, and also the seats were really stiff. No comparison IMO.

  • I have a 2010 Subaru Forester, it's in the shop from being rear-ended and the rental place gave me a new Kia Sportage to drive. It's loaded which is nice, seems to have an ok amount of room, but I HATE how small the back window is. The visibility just isn't there.

That's the extent of my experience with Kia's ... I love the Murano's though!

  • My husband and I trest drove a 2011 Ford Edge just a few weeks ago before we bought our Ford Escape. We absolutely LOVED it. It ended up being a little bit out of our price range, or else we probably would have purchased it. I don't know anything about Muranos or Mazdas.
  • No personal experience yet, but DH and I have done quite a bit of research on what we plan to buy in a year or two when our van dies. We really liked the Chevy Traverse and the Chevy Equinox. The Equinox has great gas mileage. My parents have the Torrent which is almost identical to the Equinox and love it-it seems very spacious and that it would fit our needs well. The only thing that would make me want the Traverse more would be if we have a 3rd child for the extra space.

  • We test drove a lot of mid-sized crossovers/SUVS before we bought a Murano last year.  I felt the Murano was by far the most comfortable out of all the cars we drove and I really liked the way it drove (we did not get AWD).   I love that I'm a little higher up than in a car, but I don't feel like I'm driving a huge vehicle!  We got a mid-range model and I love the extras that it comes with, especially the remote open trunk (very handy for grocery shopping with a kiddo).

I also really wanted to look at the Equinox because of the good gas mileage, but they didn't have any of the new models out at the time we were ready to buy.

We test drove a Santa Fe and the Mazda Cx-7 or 9 (I can't remember) and we didn't like the ride in either as much as the Murano.
