My mom bought us an awesome little snowsuit/coat from BRU for around $30. It's the Miniwear brand and I can't find a pic online of it anywhere, so here's a crappy cell phone shot:
It has little flap-mittens for the hands and seems to be really well made. It's thick and the inside is lined with a really soft cotton. I can't wait to put LO in it!
Coats are a major PITA for a newborn, IMO. You're better off with something like the above poster has, or lighter cothes and a bundle me or something. Honestly! I bought a few cute coats for DS and he never wore them!

Keep in mind that I'm from the South so it doesn't get that cold down here. But honestly, dealing with a coat on a new born was way too annoying. We ended up just putting a hat on him and I would usually wrap a thin blanket around him in the infant seat and then cover that with a heavier blanket while we were outside. We did go to WI for Christmas when he was 10 mos old and it was bitterly cold- his tears froze to his cheeks and it broke my heart! I swear, I don't know how you Northern folks do it.

One day at a time, and pray for spring when it's still 20* in March. Fortunately for me, I live in Southeastern WI which isn't as bad as the north and west.
I registered for a snow-suit looking thing, and I haven't had my shower yet, but I am not sure if I'll get it. I did, however, also register for a bundle me and I think that'll work better.

We've been having some bitter-ass cold winters the past couple of years (as in it doesn't get above 0 for a week at a time). I don't plan on taking Kamikaze out to make snow angels this year so as of now, we're not getting anything since I read coats/snowsuits are a no-no in car seats. We did get a cozy cover which should help keep the wind off his face though and we'll be using a warm blanket underneath.

I agree with PPs tho I know it's not the answer you were asking for. we're not doing a coat this year, just lots of light layers and always keeping extra blankets on hand and obviously not taking him outside into the cold more than we need to while he's an infant.

My SIL gave me a powder blue coat that her LO used to wear. But, I'm not even sure I'll use it. I registered for one of the JJ Cole things to put around the car seat (not the BundleMe, but the one that fits more like a shower cap around the front of the seat). I figure that will be the easiest and will keep him warm.
