Preemies

Bassinet vs Crib

Hi, I've been reading that a bassinet is better for a preemie as it gives them more of a sense of security (boundary).  Have you found this to be true?  What bassinet do you recommend?  TIA

Re: Bassinet vs Crib

  • We actually started my preemie out in a Mission Style Cradle from JC Penney's.  Overall, it was more his size, almost like his bassinet in the hospital.  For me, it was easier to be able to move a cradle from our bedroom or the living room or to our 2nd bedroom.  And it was easier to see my preemie at our level from our bed.

With the crib, it is bigger, and we waited to put him in there until he was bigger.  A crib is a little more elevated.

  • Aiden seemed to sleep terribly in his bassinette. We moved him to his crib in his own room only 1 week after coming home and we all slept wonderfully thereafter!

  • I use a Graco Travel Lite Crib as a bassinet. It's basically a small Pack-N-Play. DD still sleeps in there and she's been home for three months. She takes naps in her crib in her own room, with an Angel Care Monitor. I'm not ready to move her yet and she still nurses in the wee hours. When she starts sleeping longer at night, I'll probably move her to her crib.

I asked a very similar question when she first came home.

  • We wanted Evan in a bassinet in our room, but he'd have nothing to do with it. We'd literally lower him into it and the wailing started, took him out and it would stop. So, he ended up in his crib in his room from day 1 home. I think being used to being in a crib in NICU had a part to play in that.
  • We started DS in a little bassinet, and he would have nothing to do with it...would only sleep with me/on me for first few weeks...so tiring.  I happened to see a new Fisher Price product which looked amazing - Rock'nPlay Sleeper.  I ordered it from the States and had it sent to Canada since it wasn't available here.  It is basically like a chair, but it is certified as a bassinet, so baby can sleep  in it without any issues of their chin going to their chest/breathing problems like in a swing/car seat/bouncy chair.  Baby's head is elevated, improving reflux issues and good for when there's a cold.  The FIRST night we got it, he slept 6 hours straight in it, and has done wonderfully since.  It has changed my life - I'm not kidding. I would do a commercial for this.  It also folds flat for easy transporting, and it rocks gently.   I wasn't sure about spending money on our last child, but it was worth every penny!!!

  • I personally used a rocking bassinet with DD. She seemed to like to be rocked to sleep and I could put it close enough to our bed that I didn't have to get out of bed to rock her back to sleep. But alot of the time she seemed to want to be held to fall asleep and then I would have to try to put her in the bassinet without waking her, so the rocking of the bassinet eas nice because if she did stir a little when I put her down the rocking would help lull her back to sleep.

Same here for us. Annabelle sleep in her bassinette (picture a mini pnp by Graco) for about a week or two before she was moved to her own room in her crib.

  • DD went right into her crib without issue. Her bedroom is right next to ours, and she was on an apnea monitor for the first 2 months she was home, so I felt okay with her being in another room.

She would occasionally nap in a PnP, but her better naps were always in her crib or snuggled on me (initially).

  • Thanks a lot for the advice.  I think we will stick with our crib.
  •  I use a Graco Travel Lite Crib as a bassinet. It's basically a small Pack-N-Play. DD still sleeps in there and she's been home for a while. She stays in my room all day and most of the night. To keep her away from others. She has reflux and we put her bouncer seat in the pp to keep her more up right. So far this has worked.
  • The first 3 nights home, we put DS in an Arm's Reach co-sleeper.  Nobody slept well, so we put him in the crib in his own room and he has been there ever since.  I'm not sure what we are going to do with #2.  Guess we will wait and see when he is born.
