Recommend your pump?

I'm currently renting a pump from the hospital. I need to return it next month, so I need to buy one of my own. Especially for when I go back to work in Jan. Would you recommend your pump? And when should I start thinking about building my stash for when I go back to work? TIA

  • I have the Medela PISA. I like it well enough. Its definitely not as good as the one I used in the hospital, but definitely not bad either. There are just times when I feel like it doesn't get EVERYTHING like LO can. However, it works well enough for me to pump at work every day.

I wish I had started thinking about building my stash a lot earlier. We ran through my stash pretty quick. I would say if you are already pumping regularly, start stashing now. LO was with my mom one afternoon and through the night for my birthday and we went through a lot of my early stash then. I thought I had enough, but wish I had a lot more. So, stash as much as you have the room for.

  • I have a medela freestyle, and used it a lot since i ended up just pumping not nursing. The highlight for me was the re-chargable battery, and the size. it is seriously small! technically i could put it in my robe pocket and walk around the house to clean or something. never did that ;-) but it was nice to not be plugged into the wall.

i purchased it at addalittlelove.com it was the best deal out there i could find.

logan was just playing with it this morning since i got it out of retirement ;-)

  • I had the FreeStyle... like it a lot.  I didn't pump for the first month... and really was just "trying things out" for the second month.  I probably didn't start pumping for supply until month #3... and went back at the end of that.  With one pumping session a day (after the 9/10 am feeding)... I got 1-2 oz per session... and I build up about enough milk for the first day of going back.  Not really enough... but enough to work.   I also supplimented pretty early... so now that I'm typing it... I'm probably not a good example.

FWIW... you'll need about 20 - 24 oz (4-5 bottles) for the baby each day you're gone.  If you're luckily... you'll be able to replenish that while you're pumping at work.  But you'll need at least that much for to cover the first day.

I would do that!!  At home... while DS was napping.  But I wasn't doing chores... I was Bumping!  ;)

I also have the Freestyle and just bought it with this second child. I love it. Its small and portable and the battery part of it is awesome. I have never put it in my robe pocket, but darnit, i might now !

  • My hospital pump was an ameda and a friend gave me an ameda purely yours.  It was nice because the parts I'd been fitted for with the hospital pump worked with the purely yours so I didn't have that expense (and fitting for the larger flanges)  I have a friend with an medela and the flanges seem to attach oddly (but maybe that's just because I'm not as familiar)
  • i have the Ameda Purely Yours & have liked it - but have nothing to compare it to. :-/
  • I used the medela freestyle and loved it.  There are some websites online where you can get the pumps for MUCH cheaper than BRU.

https://www.awaybabyessentials.com/ this is where I got my pump.

I started after a month (or whenever your milk is suppose to regulate, I forgot) and added an extra feeding where I pumped.

  • I have the Medela Freestyle and loved it.  I love how I didn't have to be plugged in to use it and it's so small and portable.

I started adding a pumping session around 6-7 weeks.  I would pump about 1-2 hours after L went to bed.  In the beginning I only got 2 ounces or so but I always pumped at the same time every night and my body eventually adjusted to having milk then even if I had fed L an hour earlier.  When Lucas was 4 months (and I went back to work) I added an additional pumping session first thing in the morning before I showered and he was awake.  So I had 2 additional pumping sessions.  This helped boost up my freezer stash and I never needed to supplement.  Most days I pumped enough at work to cover what he took in during the day but during growth spurts I didn't which is why I added those 2 extra sessions each day.

  • I have the Medela Freestyle also. I LOVE IT!! I love how portable it is... I have been able to pump in the car!

I pump exclusively, but I think at 6 or 7 weeks I was getting enough that I was able to start my freezer stash.

  • Ditto the freestyle.  And yes, I have put it in my robe pocket and pumped while around the house.  It was so convenient to do it that way.
  • I have the Medela Advanced Pump in Style, and I love it!
  • I ahve the Medela PISA and although I like it, I am thinking maybe if there is a next time I will try this freestyle. It sounds a lot easier to bring to work. What a schlep that PISA is.
