How do you pronounce "Madeleine"?

Do you pronounce the third syllable as "lynn" or "line"?  Thanks for your input!

  • It's one that I'd wait to hear somebody say before trying to say it myself!  It looks more like -line to me (or even -lane with the ei), but my default would be -lynn since I think that's more common...but I wouldn't assume since it could go many ways! :)

  • phonetically it should sound like "lean" but I'm guessing it's intended to be "line. '  It makes me think of a lein on a house.  lol  (not necessarily a bad thing)

ETA: Really? huh. okay I can kind of see "lynn"

Because it's the French version, in my head it sounds like "len" (rhymes with "pen").

yes, the spelling is the french version, we don't say it on French often though, but DH's Mom does, who is French. We say the ending as lynn...either way, I think it's the prettiest name ever!!

  • It's Mad-uh-LENN, really.  MAD-uh-lynn is close enough, though.  Mad-uh-LENN is the French pronunciation, since it's the French spelling, but we usually just say MAD-uh-lynn the same way we say PER-is instead of Pah-REE.  We're Americans.  (I am thisclose to being fluent in French, but not quite.)

    (That's E's middle name.)
