Finding reputible agency

As posted a few days ago, we are new to the adoption process.  I was wondering how you go about finding a reputible adoption agency.  I've heard so many horror stories!

Re: Finding reputible agency

  • lots of research!

We started by looking at several, then narrowed our choices down until we found what worked best for us.  We chatted with several references (and actually heard about our facilitator through a friend on a message board who was also adopting at the time).

good luck! I know some folks will come on and recommend some yahoo sites that some people have used - I hope that helps too!

  • Research, research, and then research some more. :)  We asked around for personal references from friends and family. Then, did research online (Google the agency, etc). Then, I checked the Better Business Bureau to see if there were any outstanding complaints. Then, contacted the local (where their home office is located) DA's office for consumer fraud and requested copies of any complaints that had been filed against the agency (including documentation on the outcome); you are entitled to that information through the Freedom of Information Act. Then, I just Googled the name and searched for people that had used the agency (not their provided references) and contacted them to see what they had to say. Also, I signed up for a couple of agency review groups; they are a gold mine of information. If you would like information on those groups, just shoot me an email: bogeyanderica@yahoo.com

     Good luck!

    Hope this helps,

    Erica

  • I highly, highly recommend doing tons of research.  If you find an agency you like, contact them and ask for a few numbers of previous clients (if they're okay with that) so you can talk directly to someone who has used the agency.  I work in adoption now (with the consultant group we used to adopt Lily) and I work daily with many agencies, so I'd be happy to check on one of you have specific questions.

    Good luck! :)
