Cincinnati Babies

you guys, my kid won't nap. Also, she's gross. what do I do?

So I think I've mentioned before that Maggie poops during naptime. Well, now she's pooping and won't sleep during naptime. Stays awake playing for almost 2 hours in her bed. I'm sure it's the dirty diaper keeping her awake, so today I went in and changed her because I could tell she'd pooped. Well, that was a mistake because now she's sobbing and I suspect won't settle for a nap anyway. And now will be in a bad mood. Hooray! I wish there was a solution to this pooping at nap problem.

Two, my kid is a spitter. She likes to spit at the dinner table, which results in a time out and discussion that the only place she can spit is in the bathroom when brushing teeth. That's not working out so well. She has been asking to take water to bed, so we've obliged. Well it turns out she's spitting it all over her pillow and the floor. So, no more water. Also she's taken to spitting when she cries, I suspect because she has the remnants of a cold. So at this moment, she's spitting off the edge of her bed and also spitting on her hand. THIS IS SO DISGUSTING. What do I do?

  • Hmmm...my first thought: is there any way you could adjust naptime, just a bit, in order to wait and put her down after her afternoon poo?  FWIW, we've had a little difficulty getting Jacob to settle for his nap over the last few days.  I'm going to go ahead and blame it on the full moon, just because science is stupid and I wouldn't believe any other logical explanation.  Stick out tongue

I'm at a loss over the spitting.  Perhaps a muzzle?  I kid...I kid...

  • I've tried, and tried putting her on the potty before. I guess she thinks it's a good time to poo because she's relaxed and not distracted.

  • Dang.  What about letting her lay down and watch a 30 minute program on tv right before nap?  Maybe she'll decide tv time is a better time to wind down and poo.  I'm grasping at straws here.
  • And I'm being the kind of person I hate, asking for advice and then shooting down every idea. ;-) We do that too, watch a little Sesame before naptime. She won't do the doo then either. Aargh!!!

  • Responding to my lame ideas is not the same as shooting down advice.  Wink

Well you totally just got on my crap list missy. I already had this conversation with D today about him not being interested in science. Don't make me have it with you too. lol

  • oodness Kristen, I read this earlier and thought about how to respond, but honestly, I have no idea how to remedy this situation.

I would suggest like PP, just to try to allow time to poo before nap- bu you said that won't work.

Just hope it's a phase- that passes quick!

  • I have no idea but the title made me LOL...sol maybe just think about that and laugh?
  • No clue on the pooping.

Leah likes to spit, too, and it grosses me out. She likes to spit and then watch it fall to the ground...or the floor, on the dog, etc. We've tried to tell her over and over that it's disgusting, it's gross, it's rude, etc., but all that has done is make her spit and then yell, "That's disgusting." She thinks it's hilarious. I'm hoping it's one of those things where she's just fascinated that spit does what it does and she'll tire of it eventually. I never let her do it in public if I can catch her, though.

  • FWIW, we're napless too...  and have been pretty much since he figured out how to climb out of his crib in July.  Once in a while, he naps, but most of the time we get nothing.  I might try to push back her "naptime" a little to see if she'll poop before she goes up there.

Anyway, I went back and re-read Ferber for this one...  and reading it gave me some resolve.  My interpretation was that some 2 year olds will drop their nap, and just giving them some downtime is helpful for both you and your daughter.  They suggested turning the tv on for an hour and letting them rest, and if they fall asleep great, if not, give up after an hour.  I don't really care for the tv bit, but it does work.  We just limit the tv the rest of the day to make up for the hour during nap.  The reason this is reco'd is because watching tv can be a stagnant activity...  I just play a DVD that he likes (blue, dora, diego, backyardigans, etc...).  Even though I don't care for the tv part, the hour of rest for both of us is more important.  I don't know if that helps you or not...  but that's what we've done.
