I have an appointment tomorrow to have my car seat installed. I was just going to bring the unopened box, figuring they will install the seat, and I can learn how that way.
A friend of mine told me they like you to at least open the box and make an attempt at it first. I kind of feel like that's pointless.
What have you done?

As a tech I've had parents come in either way - seat installed or still in the box. Either way is fine, as long as you are willing to get in there and install the seat yourself once you're there! A tech should never install the seat for you, but should be there to help you do it yourself. (If I ever complete an install myself I always take the seat out and then help the parent do it.)
If you install it yourself first, at least bring all of the paperwork/manuals that comes with the seat so you'll have that.

One officer told me that 85-90% of all car seats are installed incorrectly, so I just let them do it for me so I KNOW it is done correctly. We have never needed to uninstall either seat, so I really don't care if I know how to do it, but I know people do want to know how to do it.
But I agree with you that it seems pointless to make an attempt if so many are done wrong.

This! I'm a firefighter and we do installs, I always make sure the parent's know exactly how to put the seat in correctly. We've had parents come up with the seat in the box and out....it doesn't make a difference.
I installed ours and then had them checked. I met up with a local tech instead of going to the police or fire station.
Ditto PP about learning to install it yourself. It really isn't that hard once you figure out how to do it. At your appointment make sure you learn to do both the seatbelt install even if you get it in your car with latch. You never know when you might need to move it to another car and knowing the seatbelt install would be helpful.
We took the seat and base out of the box, but we didn't attempt to install it. The officer at the highway patrol office that does the inspections said to just bring it, we didn't have to try, he would just rather show us the correct way.. HTH..
