That didn't work out quite as planned...

I started a new job in August, about the second week, and found out I was pregnant on Sept. 11. Although it is a very small office, one attorney and two or three part time staff, I don't know him very well so I decided to keep it quiet for a few more weeks. I figured after my appointment at 12 weeks.

Well, I thought I did a pretty good job surviving through the m/s. I was never a second late to a court appearance (he is habitually hours late, yes, hours) and only once did I request not go to somewhere (because it was 3 hours away and I'd have to go alone, I'm new to the state so unfamiliar with the areas, and wouldn't get back until after 11pm). Although I never missed a real deadline with the two writing assignments he asked me to do, he never GAVE me a deadline, and just would arbitrarily ask for a draft a few days after the paralegal gave them to me (which was unreasonable given the scope of the research required for each assignment). I did provide a working draft of each one.

I was pretty miserable and I will admit to sitting on this board for a few hours at least two or three days in the last two months just trying to commiserate and feel better to get through the day. I am aware that my work must have suffered a bit, but I was in survival mode, I guess maybe a bit delusional?

Today I was told as a business decision I would no longer be able to work in the office. I also know that he can't afford me. He has not paid his own student loans in months (he required me to check his own email) and has been bouncing checks all over the place.

This all doesn't change the fact that I'm 10 weeks pregnant and now going to have to look for another job. Argh. I'm not too sad, I didn't love the job and actually thought I might be on the line of putting my license in jeopardy a few times, so I'm glad to be looking. However, what timing.

Thanks for listening to my vent, hope your Mondays started off better!

  • Sorry to hear about the job, though it sounds like it was probably for the better. I feel ya on the looking for a job while pregnant thing. I experienced the same kind of thing with my first pregnancy. I found out I was pregnant with our DS the week after I graduated college. So walking in 5 months pregnant didn't work out for me. Now I am pregnant again and back in the same place. I was waiting to hear on a position I applied for with the Department of Labor when we found out we were pregnant again. I just recieved my regreat-a-letter Friday, so now I have to keep looking. Good luck in finding one, hopefully you will find something before you start showing to much.

  • Oh man :(  I recently finished law school and know what it's like to find jobs right now.  Bummer.  Have you ever considered a judicial clerkship?  From my experience it is the most family-friendly legal job.

    Good luck over and over!

  • Good luck with your job search!

  • Can you apply for unemployment? If you can, do it until you can find a new job.  While I"ve personally never gotten government help because I don't qualify, I'd take whatever they'd give me.

  • I totally understand.  I was with the same Civil Engineering firm for just over 5 years.  The past 2 years the economy has been horrible and we went from 62 employees to 9 of us.  The first week of September we got news that the company was shutting down.  We had work, but none of our clients were paying and the company didn't have money for payroll. I found out 2 weeks later I was pregnant (although I was on BC).  So, long story short, I am without work, paying $550 a month for COBRA insurance (SO is a full time student and will be finishing school in May).  I live in Las Vegas were the unemployment rate is the highest in the country (just over 15% now).  I've had no luck so far with the job search, and it's looking like I'm going to have to find a position making about half of what I used to make mainly just for the health benefits. It's rough out there.  I wish you the best of luck with your job search...you are definitely not alone. :)
