Cincinnati Babies

? for pet owners..

So our dog has been going into the baby's room and grabbing toys and bringing them down to us. We feel terrible when we have to take them away from her and tell her no, we can tell that she gets really sad/confused. She has a million toys but for some reason she can't resist the baby toys. I am sure this will only get worse once the baby comes. What do you do in this situation? I know this may seem like a strange question but we have no clue how to handle this! She never gets into anything she's not supposed to, and she's always been able to have any toy she wants, so it's just tough for us to figure out what to do. Any advice?

Re: ? for pet owners..

  • Does she have a specific place where her toys are kept?  If not, get a basket to keep her toys in so she knows where they are.  But you may not have this problem as much once the baby is here and his/her scent is on the toys.  My dog was the same way, but since DS was born, she has hardly ever touched his toys, but of course still loves on her own.

    We don't have a specific basket or anything for her toys, great idea! I will try this.

  • No real help but wanted to warn you that your dog's obsession with baby toys is only going to get worse Stick out tongue Our new house rule we won't buy toys for DS that are over-stuffed or that squeak because my dog goes CRAZY over them. I swear, it's a daily battle between my dog and son over toys. Heck, now they just play with whatever (dog plays with toddler toys and my son plays with dog toys). Honestly, I just gave up the fight Wink

  • Molly is actually pretty good with Eli's toys and leaving them alone.  The flip side is not even close to true.  Eli is the one stealing her toys.  However by the time we got Molly, Eli was a little older and playing with more harder toys.  We tend to keep her toys out of our family room, outside or in her crate, but not where E's toys are.

    Also I would start training the dog now to stay out of baby's room.  If dog wanted to cuddle with the baby that could be disasterous.  So we keep our nursery and even E's room now shut up during the day and at night to keep our cats out of those rooms.  The cats can sleep with us, just not the kid/s yet.

  • Our dogs were the same way and then once Natalie was here they didnt bother them. Our beagle/terrier mix did claim one of her stuffed animals and I let her have it. It is the only toy she messes with and Natalie even tries to "give" her toys to play with.

  • I agree with PP about having a basket that are the dog toys. And now that DD is here she has a basket too. I just keep saying to both of them "those are Chloe's (dog) toys we don't touch those" or "Those are Audrey/Baby's toys"

     Once your baby is here it may be better. Chloe has actually never really bothered DD's toys and maybe because her scent is on them. I do try to be careful with how I handle them so she never thinks a bear is her toy to grab.

    Here is a funny story though. The other day DD had one of the dog's toys and Chloe came over to take it from here. Audrey said "MINE". Her  new word that she has learned.....{hanging head}
