Baby Sign Language

So Oliver is still not talking (he's 17 months).  He says dad and sometimes mom but that's basically it.  He can do a couple animal noises and I know he understands me b/c I can ask him a question and he'll shake his head yes or no, he can go get what I ask him to get and he'll grunt enough that I know what he wants.  I thought about teaching him some signs to help me understand him better but I'm lost as to where I should start.  Can anyone help me?  Any help is appreciated!

Re: Baby Sign Language

  • We love the Signing time series.  Henry uses a limited vocabulary but he can sign several signs too.  He also understands more than he will say.  Some children are just late talkers.  Both DH and DS1 were so I am not concerned.

  • Brooke uses signs, and it is so nice to be able to communicate somewhat with her since she doesn't talk yet.  I look the signs up online, and introduce them as we are doing whatever the sign is for.  So when it's bathtime, I sign bath, or whenever I say it I sign it.  Right now we just do milk, bath, all done, eat, drink, and more, but I'm going to start introducing more here soon.  She understands everything we say though which is a plus, and points to whatever she wants all the time, sometimes accompanied by one of the signs.
  • We have been using signs for a couple of months now. The only thing she signs back are milk and ceiling fan. I am trying really hard to get more and all done. She usually smiles or giggles when I sign them so I think she is understanding.

I've learned most of my signs online or if  you have an ipod/iphone I downloaded an app that I really like. It was $5 but it is nice to have it on hand to refer to.

I'd choose just a few signs that you'd like to see him start using and use them yourself anytime you say the word.  Get the whole family on board, too, so he sees everyone communicating that way.  I haven't tried sign language  below the preschool age so hopefully that works for you!

  • The baby sign language that Jacob knows (eat, more, milk, please, thank you, cookie (could've done without this one - HA!), etc.) has been invaluable; but all the credit goes to my mom.  I think she has employed a number of books and videos, all found at the local library.
