Success after IF

My poor baby has a constant diaper rash :(

I am feeling so terrible right now. For the last 2-3 months, we have been battling almost constant diaper rashes. It has gotten to the point where Hayden cries when he sees a wipe or you even try to take off his diaper. Now we have had breaks for maybe a week or two between them but it has been taking a week to clear it up with OTC creams. I have tried EVERYTHING from loads of naked time to cleaning with warm water to constant diaper changes.

The only thing that seems to be the "constant" that is the problem is that he poops in the middle of the night. For whatever reason, it doesn't wake him up so in turn he doesn't wake me up. So he will sleep with it for however long (I am guessing a few hours) and it is irritating his skin to the point that it is raw. I have a call into his pedi's office right now to see about getting a RX cream for it. (Just waiting for a call back.) It is my hope that if I can get the RX to clear it up faster, it will give his skin a chance to heal a little more and we will have less problems. We have the pooping in the middle of the night issue probably 3-4 times a week. Anyone have any ideas as to how to stop this? I am at a loss here and could really use some suggestions.

  • Can you put a really thick layer of Vaseline on at bedtime, that way the poop won't be right up against his skin?

Although that's probably it, have you tried changing brands of diapers? My DD was allergic to several brands and it got progressively worse as she got older, and I ended up having to switch to cloth for her around 1.

  • If you put a thick layer of Triple Paste, etc. on before bed, does it help protect him until you can change his diaper?  Are you sure it isn't yeast?  Rashes suck.  :(

I wondered about the diapers but he has been on the same brand for over a year (since he was 4 months or so). He never had a problem until a couple of months ago. Would it really take that long for a reaction to them to show up? Now he does use Pampers Extra Protection for overnights and Target diapers during the day so which one to blame? LOL!

Yeah we have tried the thick layers of so many different creams I have lost count. I am not sure if it is yeast. That is a question I plan on asking his pedi's office when they call back. Thanks for the tip.

I honestly can't remember, but I know DD had a rash for months it seemed.  It might be worth a shot of picking up a smaller pack of another brand just to see.

Thanks! I am going to have to go pick up his RX cream in a little bit that the dr's office thankfully is calling in so I will pick up a small pack of another kind and see how that works.

  • During my new mom's class our facilitator told us about another mom that was having a bad diaper rash problem, after getting cream to deal with it she bought a hair dryer with a cold blast button and dries her LO off with that during every diaper change and it seemed to help because she could get her LO really dry quickly.

  • I know that it is a less than ideal suggestion, but could you set an alarm for, say 2:00am (gulp and ouch) tom check his diaper and change him if he's poopy? That way he won't be in a poopy dipe for as long.

Younsaid that you tried all sorts of creams, have you tried California Baby diaper cream? Grant had a persistent rash that, despite two prescription creams, would not go away. California Baby, which has an anti fungal in it, finally did the trick. Regardless, I hope H's tushy is ALL better soon!

  • Other thoughts - bag the wipes until he's been rash free for several weeks - just use very soft baby washcloths with warm water.  Also - switching to a fragrance free/chlorine free dipe for a while - try seventh generation or earth's best.

  • Is it something he is eating? We had this same issue of constant diaper rash a few months ago. I noticed it got really bad once after I bought a Costco sized strawberries. I stopped strawberries and no more rash. She has no other reaction to them- no rash on her body, vomiting nothing but the diaper rash.

  • I think you saw my post about Nolan's diaper rash this past weekend. We got an RX cream, but it isnt really doing too much. I just called the pedi back and they told me to keep using the RX, but to also mix equal parts- Desatin, Milk of Magnesia, Vasoline, and Eucerine cream. They said to make a big batch and keep it in the fridge and apply at each change. They said when it is cold it feels good on the rash, and all those different things have different elements that will help clear up the diaper rash.

I havent tried it yet, after nap I am going to pick it all up and see how it goes. They said it should clear up in just a couple of days. But that is also what they said about the RX cream...and it isnt that much better. :o(

That is a good idea. I might have all of those here at my house. I know for sure I have 3 of the 4 items...will have to check on the Milk of Magnesia. The pedi's office also told me to try an athletes foot cream and vaseline concotion so we are trying that now along with a different diaper. Of course the pharmacy had to order the RX cream and it won't be here until tomorrow. Just my luck!!

  • Is it bumpy? It might be yeast, which means it will be hard to get rid of...

E has this issue, too. He doesn't poop in the middle of the night, but he is really sensitive. We use only huggies pure and natural and that has helped a bit.

When he has a flair up, I use nystatin, and then slather on desitin, like icing a cake, A super thick layer like that can keep the skin protected.

  • Sorry about the diaper rash:(

Let me know if it works when you change diaper brands b/c my lo's have diaper rashes off and on and we use pampers.  Mainly DS and from the middle of the night when he has a poop diaper and I don't know about it till the morning(like you said)  He was once on a RX and it cleared up but then after having a bad diaper throughout the night it comes back.

And DD had one too 2 weeks ago but turned into a yeast infection:( Its all clear now but the same thing happened this morning when she had a poop diaper from last night she got red again.

I will keep you updated. I bought some Luvs today to try out and see if it works. Sadly my pharmacy was out of the RX cream that the dr. called in so we won't have it until tomrrow. The dr's office recommended using an atheletes foot cream and then covering it with vaseline until I can get the RX tomrrow. I am hoping that the diaper change and the cream concotion will help.

The last one he had (last week) was a yeast infection. It was nasty and took me about a week to clear it up. We were clear for a couple of days until the new one started late last night and got worse this morning. It isn't bumpy yet so I am hoping this one won't turn into yeast which won't be fun.
