Is anyone planning to run it next year? I am considering training for the half marathon, barring more knee issues. I know it is early, but I am working on getting in shape, and thought it might be a good goal to work for. If you have experience running a half, I would love to know how you trained and any tips.
Re: Flying Pig Marathon
I've run several halfs and several fulls. I am at the point in my life where I enjoy a half - the training is more reasonable with two kids and a hectic schedule.
I highly encourage you to do it. The feeling when you cross the finish line will be spectacular!!
I have done the full flying pig, and 6 other half marathons. The pig is a challenging course due to the few hills. I trained for it mostly on flat land.mistake. However, it is a great race, very organized and I was impressed with the race as a whole. We had a ton of fun.
My advice for your first half is to start slow. give yourself plenty of time to train because I have found that there were some weeks where I was less motivated than others.
Also, train on similar terrain. If you use a treadmill you can do the incline to make fake hills. (I personally hate the treadmill, but some people love it).
My schedule was to first build up to running 4 miles. then do that 3 times a week and on the weekend do a longer run, adding .5 miles a week and building to 13 miles three weeks prior to the event, then doing 6-8 in the last 3 weeks so i wouldn't get injured or burnt out.
There are several training programs you can google to help build a schedule.
I allow myself walk breaks during a run too. I'm not a natural runner and running a race for me is a big accomplishment each time.
hydration and using gel packs for fuel during a long run were key for me, but some people think they taste awful. Don't use them on race day if you have not trained with them. you could get a tummy ache.
I have tons of race day advice, post again closer to the race and I'll fill you in on all the hard learned lessons I've had over the years (especially one involving a porta potty
)
Have fun!
Someone told me that the potties in Krohn conservatory are open to the public... and on the route. Don't know if it's the half or the full, but remember that one...
Anyway, I wanted to wish you luck! I've thought about walking the half, but running isn't for me.
I've only run one marathon (Chicago) and I was young and it was a few months after I completed military field training, so honestly, the training was fairly easy. I'd love to do another one, but I'm scared since it would take a lot of work this time.
This comment reminded me of the most startling part of the whole marathon, though. Imagine a park full of trees around the one mile mark. Full of both men and women. Who evidently forgot to go before they hit the course. It was very surreal.
