The only Alma I've ever heard of is the character Alma Hodge from Desperate Housewives, so that's where my mind goes. (And for non-DH-watchers, she was crazy and obsessive.) Sorry!

Wasn't there a nun named Alma in Sister Act? I think the old one that played the piano. That's what the name makes me think of.

love it. it means soul, as long as you pronounce it right, most people will butcher it and don't know how to pronounce it that's why they it sounds ugly in their heads.

It was my great grandmothers name and I think it sounds very classy and elegant. It's original and you don't hear it very often anymore.

I like it. I don't think it is "old ladyish" at all. It's no more "old ladyish" than Ella or Ava IMO. I like the meaning too. The only people I have known with this name are Hispanic.
