We are going to Hilton Head for Thanksgiving this year, and my parents called the other day to tell us they bought a Graco Nautilus for Sawyer.
The problem is, the Nautilus doesn't RF.
So, we are debating what to do. I think I would like to rent a convertible carseat for the week, which will cost about $60.00.
DH says he will be fine for a week FF in a 5 pt harness.
He is about 25 lbs.
What would you do?

Re: POLL: FF for a week, or rent a carseat
Why can't you bring your carseat?
well, we are flying.
I guess we could bring it, but we already have so much stuff with the luggage, the double stroller, carryon's, diaper bag....
that may be an option though...
I could, but really, in the long run, he will need the Nautilus anyways. (unls the ones you mentioned RF and FF, I am not sure )
We will probably switch him around 18- 24 months, and since we only visit them 2x a year, it would only apply to this visit.
I think your peace of mind will be worth the $60.
When we went to Hawaii when Rylee was 13 months old we special ordered cab to take up to and from the airport. It showed up with a FF facing carseat. I cried the whole way to the hotel.
If exchanging is an option what about the Graco My Ride 65
https://www.amazon.com/Graco-My-Ride-Car-Seat/dp/B003JSX68I
It rear faces to 40 pounds and harnesses to 65 pounds and is the same or cheaper than the graco
Ditto this! I was thinking the same thing. I would see if they could exchange it.

We had to do something similar to DD when she was around 12-13 mos old. She went back to rear facing just fine (although back then extended rear facing wasn't as popular).
Besides, don't statistics show that the majority of car accidents happen within a 2 mile radius of the home or something like that?
When we flew to Florida we bought this https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2910024
and just brought our carseat along with us. The bag was easy to use and really helped keep the carseat from getting dirty, torn, etc.
It fit our Britax Marathon perfectly and was super easy. They consider it a "specialty" item so it didn't count as luggage.
We were in the same predicament when DD was 15 months. She FF'ed for a week and had no trouble going back to RF'ing when we got home.
I am doing research on FFing vs RFing for a speech I am giving. Now that I know the statistics:
A child RFing is 75% less likely to die or be seriously injured in a crash
During a crash in forward facing seats the neck is subjected to a force of 300kg vs 50kg in the rear facing seat.
I know I personally couldn't handle him being FFing for even a week.
This would be my fear as well.
ETA: Ack, the quote didn't work. I'd be afraid he'd resist going back to RF.
We took our carseat with us when we flew to Myrtle Beach, too. We had a bag to put it in and gate checked it (along with our stroller) and it was no big deal at all.
Married to my BFF on 8.13.05 (after dating 5 years)!
DS born 2.14.08. DD born 9.30.09.
I picked Shiver me timbers. Cause it was fun.
I would see if your parents could exchange it or I would bring mine on the plane. Or do they have any other friends who are also grandparents who they could borrow a RF seat from?
I was just way to nervous to switch that close to a year. GL!
