make-your-own baby food: thawing cubes?

How do you thaw your baby food cubes after freezing them?

Re: make-your-own baby food: thawing cubes?

  • I take the cubes out of the freezer the night before and put them in the fridge (in a bowl). Then an hour or so before I feed her, I put it on the counter to get it to room temp.

If I need to, I use the defrost mode on the microwave, but I try not to.

  • I have a few ceramic ramekins that I thaw them in in the microwave.  It doesn't hurt them and I only do it long enough to soften them up so that I can stir it and mash to thaw the rest of the icy chunks.

  • I do the same as Irish.

I just started to make baby food again with Lucy, and I have taken the cubes out the night before and let them thaw in a bowl in the fridge. Then I'll usually let them get to room temp on the counter for a half hour or so before I use them.

  • I microwave them.

    Easy peasy

  • Thanks ladies! We made carrots tonight. Having them for breakfast tomorrow. Avocados went ok, but they make DS gassy.

This for us too. I try to take them out the night before, but that doesn't always happen.
If I forget to take them out the night before, I put them in a closed container in hot water. It takes a little bit longer than the microwave but I feel more comfortable doing it that way.
  • I put them in a plastic cup and drop them in the bottle warmer.

Why?  What is the concern with the microwave?

because it unevenly heats things, you can have a random pocket of VERY hot food. So when I use the microwave, I make sure to stir it and let it sit awhile.

Just one of those silly OCD things I have. As long as you stir them good, you should be fine.
  • Microwave, stir, stick my finger in it to feel for hotspots, serve :). I also have hypercolor spoons that turn colors when the food is too hot.

  • Microwave for 10-15 seconds, then stir really good to make sure there are no hotspots.
