Cloth Diapering for moms with Multiples

So we are debating using cloth vs. disposable diapers.  Have any of you with multiples preferred one over the other, or any who are expecting multiples- have you thought about what you will use?  With 3 babies that will be a lot of diapers, I'm curious to see what will be the best route......

Re: Cloth Diapering for moms with Multiples

  • I thought about cloth but everyone I know IRL told me I would be chained to the washing machine so for now I am going to at least start with disposable.  When they start going a little less I may switch.

  • I CD the twins, it's a breeze and I love it.  We run wash every other night- it's no biggie.

We use a mixture of BG and GroBaby- I'm selling some of my stash if you're intersted, tagsale1221@yahoo.com

It's saved us tons of money, no diaper rash and they're so cute! We also never run out and have to go to the store- we've never had a blow out either!

  • I was thinking of using a local diaper service for the laundry.  I am not really interested in doing it if we have to do all of that laundry.  It will be a lot.  My neighbors use the service and love it.
  • If there was a service here I might use it but we don't have one...
  • We're going to CD using only prefolds diapers and covers. The cost will make a crazy-huge difference, and prefolds require the least amount of work. Wash, dry, stack, diaper, fasten, cover, remove, repeat. Singletons require diaper laundry every 3 days, so I just figure we'll be doing one (simple) load of diaper laundry a day. One more load a day won't kill us, especially since it'll be the easiest load of my day.
  • The laundry really isn't too bad. I do 2-3 loads of diapers per week. We opted for a slightly larger stash for less laundry. Even with going with the larger stash, cloth is SO much cheaper than disposables. I'll be able to CD the girls for well under $1000 between birth and potty training.  I probably would have easily spent that on disposables by now if we'd done disposables.

Cloth diapers have come a LONG way since I was a baby. You can get ones that work exactly like a disposable, except you wash it. We haven't used a diaper pin or pair of elastic plastic pants yet. We also have far fewer blowouts than most people do using disposables as the diapers tend to fit better and hold more.

  • I highly suggest clicking over to the CLOTH DIAPER board for more info.  It can be a lot to take into consideration at first, and it can be overwhelming.  I looked into it a few times with DS but got so overwhelmend I didn't do it.  Now that I'm expecting twins I decided to try it for sure!  I've been CDing my son since August, full time and it's been great, and so EASY!  My SIL is the one who ultimately talked me into it.  Her twins, who were premies, have been cloth diapered since they were 1 month old. She said she was spending $100 a month in diapers and wipes for two.  She used Softbums which I had never heard of.  She sent me one to try and I LOVED it!  It's truely a ONE SIZE diaper, meaning it adjusts and you will never HAVE to buy another size diaper for your kiddos.  They fit 5-35 pounds. :)  Diapers I had tried in the past were always too big on the leg holes for my skinny boy but these adjust on an elastic system and you can make them exactly the size you want!  I say check them out!  I spent under $200 on my stash for DS and I have enough to diaper 3 days before washing!  Washing is easy, you wash two cycles usually (for one load of diapers) then you can line dry or dry in the dryer.  I do my washing in the evening, I hang the covers over the shower curtain rod before I go to bed and I dry the inserts in my dryer.  By morning, everything is dry and ready to go.  It's 2-3 loads of "extra" laundry per week but super easy and worth it.  Plus like PP said, you never have to run out and buy diapers because you are low or out.

  • We CD the boys. My favorites are FB and BGs pockets. The laundry itself isn't bad. Stuffing them can be a small PITA, but honestly is one of my favorite "chores." (It is a guilty pleasure actually as it guarantees me a few minutes of solitude and TV time.)

    Ditto exactly!

  • I ihad 3 under 2 in prefolds and covers.  It really wasn't bad, and honestly, since PT DD#1, can barely tell the difference in the "work load."  I was lucky enough that DS is bigger than DD so they are not in the same size, so I didn't have to even purchase more for them yet.  Plus as DD#2 grows out of a size, I am able to sell that size for $10- just over a 50% decrease.  Not bad considering they diapered 3 kids!

The laundry isn't bad...once you settle into a routine, it's not bad at all.

  • We are going to be using a diaper service.  There is one in our area that does a weekly drop off/pick up and handles all of the laundry.  They charge $110 per month for twins (140 diapers per week), and my mom is getting us a year of the service as a gift.

We also looked into buying cloth diapers, which I probably would have done if my mom hadn't offered to buy us a year.

  • we CD using the grobaby/grovia system. It's really so easy. We do wash every other night - we either put it in when we get home from work and in the dryer overnight, or we set the washer for a delay to run overnight and then throw stuff in the dryer when we get up in the morning.
