My BFF needs your help

Hello Ladies:

My best buddy is 8 weeks pregnant and so very sick with morning sickness.  It lasts all day long and she isn't able to eat or drink.  She has gotten a prescription from the doctor and it's helping a little, but she is still feeling very crappy.

She is already showing signs of dehydration with cotton mouth so I am getting really worried about her.

What are some other options that may help her start feeling better?

Thank you ladies!

  • I should also add that she has lost 12 pounds over the past 3 weeks.

  • They are expensive, but I've been surviving off of preggie pops:

You can get them at Motherhood.  I was skeptical, but a friend bought me some and they helped a ton.

  • I was like this for about 30 weeks of my pregnancy with DD. I was in  the hospital several times for fluids and ended up weighing 5 lbs less than my pre-pregnancy weight on the day I delivered her.

Obviously, fluids help. I always vomited water back up but found that ginger ale, gatorade and decaf iced tea usually stayed down. Juicy Juice was also a life saver. I constantly sucked on popsicles and ice. For some reason they seemed to stay down better.

As for the nausea, popcorn with lots of butter, sucking on lemon drops and peppermints helped a little. I hope she starts feeling better soon!

  • i drank alot of the kroger generic sparkling water. it helped me belch which relieved the nausea some. TMI. sorry. :)
  • Eating protein first thing in the morning (even one of those Special K protein "shakes") seemed to help me quite a bit.
  • I second the Preggie Pops

  • I ditto Warrior. The only liquid I could keep down was Diet Ginger Ale. And be sure it is made with real ginger. (Canada Dry was the brand I used). That is all I drank for several weeks. Nothing else stayed down. For about two weeks the only food I could eat was mild cheese (Swiss) and pretzels.

I know some people have had luck with mint teas since the mint is supposed to help with nausea. I also liked (sugar-free. I couldn't stand anything that was too sweet) lemon-flavored hard candies. Those helped with some of the nausea.

The dehydration is scary and needs to be addressed right away. It can quickly turn into a problem requiring a hospital visit. I hope she finds some relief soon.

  • I wish I had some advice.  I was like this with Carter and I just remember it being awful.  I was sick all day and night and nothing seemed to help.  They put me on Phenegran and it seemed to help a little with the puking, but I still felt nauseous constantly.  I ate a lot of saltine/oyster crackers and drank coke and sprite to settle my stomach the best that I could.  Beyond that I pretty much ad to wait it out.

I hope she feels better soon!  Morning sickness is the worst!!!

  • I don't have advice but I do have sympathy!  I get pretty violently sick about once a week with this baby and I have no clue how other moms have done it every.day.all.40.wks!  I give them the biggest kudos around!  I hope that your friend feels relief soon.

  • I had hyperemesis (which is basically just very severe morning sickness) I lost 20lbs in the first 14 weeks of my pregnancy b/c I was so sick and it caused me to eventually need home IV therapy (I was hooked up to IV fluids 24/7 from 7wks-14wks) and I had a zofran pump w/ that which is similar to an insulin pump in you wear it all the time and it has an injection site w/ a catheter that you leave in your stomach so that you get a low dose of zofran all day long. The IV therapy and zofran pump along w/ phenergan suppositories were honestly the only thing that worked for me but I know I am not the norm. If she is losing weight quickly and getting dehydrated she definitely needs to talk to her dr about alternative options.

It took me 2 weeks of vomitting non-stop, 3 ER visits with IV fluids and trying every trick in the book before we realized nothing was working. If she is that sick I would recommend she go to a pharmacy and buy some ketone sticks to test her urine to make sure she isnt spilling ketones/isnt dehydrated. If those come back and show that she isnt dehydrated/spilling ketones I would try what pp's suggested w/ ginger ales, ginger candies, mint tea, zofran, etc. if it shows she is  spilling ketones I would recommend she be more insistent in seeing her OB sooner than later and asking for some other options. IV therapy and zofran pumps suck but honestly I felt SO much better on all that that it was worth it to have to drag an IV pole around w/ me for 7 weeks lol GL!

  • Thank you for all of the advice ladies.  I am going to pass it all on to her.  I picked her up some preggo pops and ginger ale while I was out today.

She is already taking something that her OB prescribed and it works to a degree, but she always starts feeling really bad around 5 or 6:00pm.

I talked to her at 5:00 today and she was feeling okay at that point.  She has her first appointment tomorrow so hopefully they will figure something out to help her start feeling better.

    Thanks again.
