3rd Trimester

Measuring big at 31wks?

Anyone have experience with this?  I had my appt. today and the dr. said baby boy is measuring big.  She's not too concerned, but wants to do an u/s at my next appt. in 2 wks. to check on him.  What could it mean if he's too big?

Re: Measuring big at 31wks?

  • I am suppose to be 29 weeks but I am measuring 32+ weeks.  I went for an ultrasound 2 weeks ago, and my baby boy weighed 3lbs 3oz!  My husband weighed 10lbs 10oz and my son was born 3 weeks early and weighed 8 lbs 8oz.  My doctor now wants me to do the 3 hour gluclose tol. test even though my 1 hour came back normal....I am begining to get frustrated.  I hope all is coming along well for you.  Was your 1st baby big?

Oh, great...I hope she doesn't make me do the 3hr!  DD was 8lbs and was born at 39wks.  The dr. didn't seem at all concerned, so at the time I didn't think to ask any questions.  But after I left I started wondering what it could mean, what they would have me do, or if they might take him earlier than planned (we already have c/s planned for 39wks).  Good luck and thanks for the feedback!

  • If your blood sugar levels are too high, the sugar can cross the placenta and cause your baby to grow too big.  If you have smaller hips/internal measurements, you will not be able to deliver a big baby and will need a C-section to prevent shoulder dystocia (when the babies' head can fit through the birth canal, but the shoulders are too wide to deliver and the umbilical cord can be compressed.)
  • Yep, I've been measuring huge.  At my 28 week ultrasound baby boy was estimated at 3 1/2 lbs. already, and at my appointment last week I was measuring almost 35 weeks.  My 1 hour glucose test came back better than okay so my doc isn't worried at all about that, she just said there's no way I'm making it to my due date with such a big baby Stick out tongue
  • At my 30 week ultrasound the peri told me that my baby weighs about 5 pounds!!  This kind of freaked me out because he said baby could weigh about 9 pounds.  I go back next week for another ultrasound, I hope that this little boy has not gained too much weight.  I have diabetes and it is well controlled.  Having a big baby has always been a concern for me.

  • My MW told me that you should never been induced on a baby being 'too big'...she said a lot of DRs like to use that excuse to schedule births but it's not a medical reason. So I would be aware that if you are wanting to avoid induction that you shouldn't do it b/c of size.

I wish my doctor said that! Did she mean they'd take you early (induction) or that you'd probably just go into labor early?

On Tuesday, at 31W6D the baby was already 5 pounds and measuring 2 weeks ahead. They're going to do another u/s in a month to check growth again, but she said they would not induce me early just due to size.

  • I am measuring 3 weeks 6 days ahead. I will not entertain induction until at least 41 weeks and 4 days. Here is hoping that Luke decides to come out in a timely manner.
  • Well I'm already having a scheduled c/s so him making his way out shouldn't be a concern.  Thanks for all the input everyone!

  • I have consistently measured 4 to 5 weeks ahead.  DD weighed 7 lbs 3 oz at 35 weeks.  I am having a c/s so weight isn't a tremendous concern, but my fluid is high which is a concern.

She never hinted at induction at all (plus I'm totally against induction unless it's absolutely necessary to baby's health), just that he's been ahead of schedule since the beginning so I'll probably go early.  Plus I'm on bed rest due to preterm labor (at 26 weeks), so she doesn't think I'll last very long after being released from bed rest at 36 weeks (just because of symptoms I still have and whatnot).

  • I literally just went through this, at 31 weeks, this past Thurs! My uterus is measuring at 35 wks at my prenatal appt I had last wed, so I went to have an ultrasound the next day (i also was doing my 3 hour glucose test, since I failed the 1 hour test, I am waiting to see if I have gestation diabetes, which could be the cause of measuring big..)

At the ultrasound, baby is measuring on the big side, and I also have extra ambiotic fluid, but nothing to be concerned about. I still do not know if i have gestational diabetes, but it doesnt sound like i do, since baby is not measuring too big, just 9 days, and my son was a bigger baby, and they are not going to change my due date over this. My uterus is measuring a month ahead because she is big, and from the extra fluid.

I wouldnt worry, and good luck!
