High fever and breast milk...

Has anyone else experienced a high fever that spikes when your breast become engorged and won't go down for several hours?  The only things that are helping are baths, nursing, and tylenol helps a little.

Anyone every heard of or experienced?

Re: High fever and breast milk...

  • You could be getting mastitis. Do you have any hard red spots on your breasts?

The most important thing is feed frequently, and use motrin. How often is the baby eating?

If you have hard redspots or definate fever you need to call our doctor in the morning.

  • Are your breast hard and hot to the touch in a area?! To me it sounds like mastitis. I had it twice and the second time I got antibotics just keep feeding and it will get better. Def sucks :-/

  • I agree with posts above.  How often/long is LO feeding?  That and AB are the only thing to help it.  I know when DS was about 5 months I had a clog duct due to not have a big enough nursing bra.  Make sure you have to room to grow when your full.  If it presists and you can pump, do so to relieve the pressure. definitely call you doc in the morning.  It can get really serious if you don't treat it.

  • Yeah, sounds like mastitis. Nursing didn't help me enough. The only way I got through it was to take baths. Make it as hot as you can stand it, hold your breast under the water and then try to massage the milk out of the engorged area. My whole breast seemed engorged and it took a few days to go back to bearable. Other than that, I did use tylenol.
  • She is eating a ton.  Sometimes every hour, the most we have gone is 2 1/2 hours.  My breasts are not hot to the touch, they get engorged and hot baths with my breasts held under do help.  Sometimes my fever spikes and I start shaking even as I am feeding her.  But that seems to happen when I go longer than four hours without the tylenol.  But I know that I shouldn't be taking that much tylenol.  I also have a really bad headache that doesn't go away no matter what I take. I will be calling the doctor in the morning.  I called the morning it first started and the doc on call said it was "normal adjusting" so now I want to wait till I can talk to my own doc.
