I'm a first time mom and wondering how long our baby will stay in his infant car seat? I know it depends on how big he is etc. My husband and I are both small people so the chances are good that he will be small to average size. I'm wondering because I don't know if it's appropriate to put two car seats on our registry. We both have very large families and we're running out of things to put on there so that we have enough gifts for everyone to buy.
Re: How long in infant car seat?
Weight depends on which car seat you get, I have the orbit and it only goes up to 22lbs which is fine because I don't want to lug around a carseat with a heavier baby. Also, I know the baby has to be at least 1 before you can turn it forward facing but I don't know if you need to switch to a convertible at that time... I am guessing for safety reasons you would keep a smaller baby in the infant seat but I am not sure.
You can add older stuff to your registry like toddler seats (2 are handy because they are a pain to move from car to car unlike the infant seat), high chair, potty training stuff, walking, etc...
You should keep them in the infant seat rear facing until they outgrow it and then switch to a rear facing convertible. New recommendations state that babies should be kept rear facing until they exceed the rear facing limits on the convertible (depends on the brand usually atleast 35lbs). That may mean that your child will be rear facing until they are well into their toddler years and that is what is safest. I'd definitely put 1 or 2 convertible car seats (can rear or forward face) on your registry as well, if people want to buy them they will and if not it's no harm done.
