I would definitely try to make your own yogurt.. it's AMAZING. But I wouldn't try it in a crock pot. Temperature is verrrry important in making yogurt. Check out this blog & recipe (she explains why)
I've tried it in the crock pot a couple times. Mine gets too hot kills the cultures. I have better luck with this recipe because, like pp said, you can monitor the temp more accurately. It sounds a lot more labor intensive than it actually is.
i'll respectfully disagree about temperature being important. I make raw milk yogurt, but i don't think it makes a difference.
i just heat to 110 (anything above it kills the good stuff, but if you're using pasteurized milk you can heat it hotter bc it's already been killed), gently wisk in my starter, and then put in a regular cooler (usually wrapped wrapped in warm towels) for about 18 hours. works like a charm
