NBR: iPad or Laptop?

My laptop is dying.....

DH wants to get me an iPad instead of a new laptop. He thinks it would be better for me. ...

I basically use the laptop for pictures, surfing the net and emails. Pretty basic. I don't know much about the iPad... I know it would take some getting used to... but I was going to ask for a Kindle for Christmas... and the iPad has the ability to download books ...

Anyway... just curious. If you have an iPad pros/cons as opposed to a laptop?

TIA

Re: NBR: iPad or Laptop?

  • Hi,

I have an iPad, I love it. Think of it as an overgrown iPhone. If you don't get the 3G version, you have to have access to wireless internet. If you are using it for surfing the web and emails, then great. You can also use it for documents and Keynote (which is apple's version of powerpoint), but you can create them on the iPad and export them through email, but you can't import them onto the iPad. It's great for books, too!

  • Loading the player...
  • You can't download pictures onto an iPad, so you will be able to do internet and email surfing but you can't "download" pictures directly onto it from a camera. You can sync photos to it but you'd need another computer with iTunes. We have both and honestly I still would prefer a laptop. Typing on the iPad is also a pain unless you buy a separate keyboard. My DH loves our iPad but he mostly uses it for reading things online.

  • The I-Pads are pretty awesome. I want one so bad. But can it do everything that a laptop does? If not then I would probably stick with a lap top.

  • I would still have access to a laptop at home for the other things the iPad couldn't do.... so I think that's swaying me in the iPad direction

Just wondering if it is as good as it's supposed to be Stick out tongue

  • I love my iPad -- I'm writing this from it! But it doesn't take the place of a laptop. I mostly use it for reading books (on the kindle ap) and surfing the web. It's awkward to type on, for sure. Much more annoying than the iPhone.

  • If you will need to do much typing, get the laptop.  I have both and the laptop is much more versatile.  I've heard you can get a keyboard for the ipad, but then you might as well have a laptop.  Also the ipad is really slow using the internet through our wifi about 50% of the time for some reason.  Not sure if that is just something in our configuration or due to the device.

We bought an accessory at the Apple store so that we can download pictures from our camera. I have not used it yet, but my DH has. I really like my iPad, a lot! I have some great apps for my LO, he loves it too! If you have access to a laptop at home, I would get an iPad.

I was concerned about this as well as I'm always taking pictures. But DH mentioned there is a camera adapter/usb so you can dowload your pics. I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the info!

  • I love my iPad, but it will not replace your computer. You need a laptop or desktop for the iPad to function properly--your have to sync it to get updates, etc.
