Recommendations for Childbirth Classes

Hey all -

Any recommendations for good childbirth classes in the Metrowest area?  I've heard good things about Isis, but their classes are only for a couple of weeks at a time, and I'm looking for a more on-going thing - sort of like the classes at Newton-Wellesley where I'll be delivering (although I haven't heard great things about their classes.)  Anyone take classes at NW and have any advice?

Thanks in advance - I'm new to posting and would love some feedback from local moms who have been there!

Re: Recommendations for Childbirth Classes

  • I haven't actually taken them yet, but I'm signed up for a couple at Destination Maternity in Natick.  They are FREE.  I passed on NWS (although I'm delivering there, too) based on their expense.  But I've also heard good things about Isis.

  • A bit further than metrowest, but Mothers and Company in West Boylston offers a large variety of classes.

Other options include classes with an independent educator trained through ALACE/IBWP, Lamaze, Hypnobirthing, Bradley, ICEA and others (if you go to the website for each organization they'll have listings of the teachers by state).

Bradley classes are 12 weeks in length, I've heard good things about Ellen Seebacher and Ann Marie Lindquist Their contact information is on the bradley website: https://bradleybirth.com/GetTeachers.aspx?statemap=MA

I personally love the HypnoBabies program, but as of now there are no local instructors.  Instead you could do the homestudy program which I've used twice and recommend to anyone looking for a childbirth education program.

  • I just did the free one at Destination Maternity.  It's only a 4 hour class, very basic stuff, but for me, I felt like it was all I needed.  But if you want more indepth stuff, it isn't for you.

  • Emerson hospital in Concord has some really GREAT classes. they run from about $45-$150 a class per couple depending on the class. I am taking one in January that is a 5 week class, Wednesday nights for 2 hours. I am also taking a free basic baby class in Westford through Lowell General. It is 2 days, Sat and Sun morning in December, 9-12:30. My friend just finished the class and said it was awesome and very interesting...and she got a duffle bag full of free stuff! Pretty good deal for a free class! They can be expensive, so be sure to pick the ones you think would be most helpful to you and your family! Good Luck!

  • I took the natural childbirth class with Randi at NWH and LOVED it! I took the parent preparation class and could have done without that, and took prenatal yoga at NWH and liked that too, only downfall is it's only a 4 session class. There are a few classes for after birth that are free, plus a new mom's group (also free) that I intend to go to, if they suck at least i didn't pay for it!  You really can't go wrong at ISIS if you have the money.
