3rd Trimester

any birth stories with Pitocin & NO epi?

that happens right?

ive heard that the pitocin makes the contrax unbearable which leads to an epi ... but if i end up having to be induced, is there a chance I could do it w/o an epi still????

?

Re: any birth stories with Pitocin & NO epi?

  • I've seen a handful since I've been on 3rd tri, so it's definitely possible!

  • i am sure you could, but it would probably suck. Sad

true. although i never expected anything less than sucky.

  • If you repost this on 0-6 you will get some answers.  There are moms there who had Pit and no epi.  You might want to repost on Monday when there are more people on.

It's definitely possible.  I was the doula at one such delivery.

I had a Pit induction and wanted to go without the epi.  I made it through 7 hours of hard labor before I changed my mind.  But my baby was posterior and I had horrendous back labor that ran down my legs and was basically paralyzingly painful.  My ctx were 1-2 minutes apart for those 7 hours and at the end I was still only 4 cm.  I *could* have continued on like that but I decided I didn't want to.  I felt like I was in transition and I was nowhere near it.

So, yes, it's possible.  It depends on how long your labor is, whether you have back labor or not and whether you want to go without the epi enough.  In the end, I just didn't want to anymore.  I was in so much pain that I didn't care about anything except ending the pain.  I could have kept on like that but I was sobbing in pain and just miserable and I didn't want to continue anymore.  If my labor had progressed faster and my baby hadn't been posterior, who knows?

    GL with your delivery.

It was rough.  But in the end, you get a beautiful baby.  However you get there, the end result is the same.  And it's worth it, no question. :)

definitely. i agree! and that is one BEAUTIFUL baby you had! :D

with my first I went 9 days over - but this OB will only let me go a week over. I get freaked out when i think about being induced and then how i'll react to the meds or epi, etc. I just would like to avoid as much as possible (in terms of meds) but I know its difficult (uh-IMPOSSIBLE!) to predict what will happen. :P

    ?

  • I know a few people that have done it, but I would just go with the flow. I always figure by the time they introduce pitocin you aren't having a 'med free' labor anyway, so you may as well enjoy it (with an epi) rather than be miserable the entire time.  But like Iris said, if you progress fast it isn't as big as issue as really LONG labors (like mine).

  • GOOD LUCK.

I had my baby on Wednesday and had to have Pitocin after my water broke prematurely.  After an hour of hard contractions I had to take it because I was in tears.  The Epi was the most wonderful feeling and I was still able to feel the urge to push and even feel her coming out.

  • Yep, it is impossible.  I was induced at 41w, made it to 1o cm, pushed for an hour and ended up with a c/s!  Oh well...

However it happens will be ok.  Hopefully you won't need Pit at all. :)

  • when I had DD, I wasn't dilating enough so they put me on pitocin....it worked and i still had her without an epi....the pitocin does intensify the contractions, but if you are up to it, you can still give birth without the epi.  I did!

    Good to hear!! thanks :)

  • I did it. My water broke and after 4 hours, the contractions still weren't regular, so they started the pitocin -- and kept raising the amount. I can say that it was pretty serious, especially near the end when I had back labor (ice packs, changing positions, and massage worked a bit on that). In the end, though, I am really glad I did it and I felt better immediately after DS was born. I also think that you *REALLY* have to believe in the breathing in order for that to work.

I just tried to keep an open mind about the whole thing -- I wanted to try it natural -- and it ended up working out well. A supportive DH and a really good nurse make a big difference, I think.

     Good luck!

  • My SIL did back in August.  It was her 2nd baby though.  She also did it standing cause she had back labor and would not lay down.  And her baby was 9 lbs 6 oz and she didn't need an episiotomy or did she tear.  So it is possible!

I wasn't induced, but I got the epi and it was pure heaven after the hell of contractions.  GL!!

  • I was induced, and I went from 1-5 cm without it. At that point, the pain was honestly bearable but I was scared...the contractions early on were a lot worse. Maybe because I didn't know what to expect...but I guess I was too scared because they told me that you can't move when you get the epi and I was scared that the contractions would be a lot worse later and I wouldn't be able to get it without moving. Does that even make sense? lol. But I'm sure it's very possible. Good luck!
  • I had pitocin with my son and no epi it was fine
  • I think its totally possible, but really depends how long your labor is and how much pain you can mentally handle . I went 9 hours on pit and was ok for the first 6 hours. Then the pain was too horrible, I thought for sure I was dying. My contractions were 1-1/2 minutes apart. It would have been alot easier if they were spaced out a little. I ended up needing a Csection because my labor was not progressing.  I was surprised I was able to make it that long. I really dont do well with pain.

I wish you the best, and hope you get the birth you are hoping for!!

  • I was induced with both of my babies with Pit.  I got an epi with both but the labors were entirely different.  DD#1 would have been unbearable based on the pain when I got the pit and watching the contractions.  Now my second daughter's contractions were not as bad from what I expereinced and saw on the monitor and it all went faster.

I just think any advice you will get on this will be just stories.  Everyone is different and every labor is different.  Good luck!
