December 2010 Moms

picking the date of your c/s

If your OB has already said "you have to have a c-section", how did you pick the date? Since I know they won't let me go past 38.5 weeks, and that puts me at the Tuesday before Thanksgiving (11/23), I was thinking maybe we could do it the Friday before that (11/19) so I'd have more time to recover and hopefully be home from the hospital before Thanksgiving.

Assuming this is a safe option for me and LO both, do you think that's a reasonable request? I would be at 38 weeks exactly on the 19th.

Re: picking the date of your c/s

  • I've been talked to about the c-section possibility.  So I haven't picked a date yet, but I'm thinking that if you doc doesn't want you going past 38.5 it's probably not a bad idea to have it done at 38.

  • Hmmmmm I wonder if your doctor would let you go in right AFTER Thanksgiving!?  My doctor says she like to do them around 39 weeks...which would put me the day before Christmas....and I would like to wait until after!?

  • Why at 38.5 weeks? Most OB's won't do anything before 39 weeks. We're doing it at exactly 39 weeks (12/20/10) so that I can be home and feeling good for Xmas eve. My OB was even slightly against that...he wanted it 12/22 and I said no way...I need to be home with DD for xmas

  • We are due 12-30 so exactly 7 days prior is 12-23.  The Dr. said with LJ being a big baby, my GD, my back injury and all that jazz that they may look at somewhere between 12-20 and 12-23 and if he seems to be getting to big before then it may be even earlier.  I'm hoping for 12-22 but we'll see if my little mister man has other plans for us.

Mostly I think it's because she's so big already. She's in the 97th percentile and he said he's never seen a baby in the 97th at this point. Also, given that my GD is being controlled by medication, he doesn't feel comfortable going to 39 weeks. He's pretty conservative when it comes to taking a chance letting GD babies grow. Of course, I'm being monitored closely with twice weekly NSTs and I'll be having a u/s at 37 and 38 weeks to check on her. He also said that in GD babies, the risk of stillbirth increases at/after 39-40 weeks.

  • Ohhh, well FWIW, DD measured 2 weeks ahead and every appt and the morning I had her, I had an u/s to estimate her weight and they had her at 8.5-9lbs and she was only 7lbs 9oz.

But I think 38.5 weeks is fine...most are just soo conservative now with the new ACOG recommenations

  • I've been told about having a c-section as well. He is going to check me in a few weeks to confirm...but he won't due anything until I'm ATLEAST 39 weeks.

He said the ACOG now recommends a c/s for a GD baby at 4500 grams (9.9lbs) when it used to be recommended at 4000g (8.8lbs). She was measured at 5lbs 15oz a week ago (roughly 2700g) and assuming she grows at .5lbs a week...we're headed towards a 9.5-10lb baby at 40 weeks, but could be more because of the GD. He's more conservative because of the 10% error rate with u/s. She could be smaller, but it would be scary if she was bigger and I tried to go vaginally. He'd rather get her out before I go into labor on my own.

  • 12/3 is also my edd and my c/s is also on 11/23. my ob does c/s anywhere from 8-10 days prior to edd, unless there's a problem and they need to get the baby out earlier. from what i hear, most ob's like to deliver closer to the 39th week as possible but will deliver early if medically needed.

so as far as things are going with me, being on blood pressure medication, seeing a high risk ob and all, he would like me to make it until 11/23 but he said if things got worse he would take the baby out earlier, so we'll just have to wait and see!

  • My Dr told me no earlier then 7 days before the due date.
  • If I have to have a c/s, which has still yet to be determined, they will do it between 39 and 40 weeks. My hospital does elective c/s on Tues afternooons, Wednesday mornings and Fridays. My mom will fly in late on Tuesday of that week (30 Nov) and will be jet-lagged on the Tuesday (the 1st), so that elaves the 3rd (Friday). They've let me have a say to that extent, but that's it. (I'd love to have the 1st as a birthday, but that's an entirely separate issue!)

  • Mine is scheduled for Dec. 15 and I'll be 39wks exactly.  My dr. wouldn't go any earlier than that, and I wanted the date pushed back as far away from Christmas as possible.

  • I have complete placenta previa which started out as a minor placenta abruption.  I am 30 weeks/2 days and have been on modified bedrest since August 16th.  My OB said I must have a CS before I have any labor pains, so she scheduled me to have an amniocentisis at week 36 (to test baby's "readiness") and scheduled my CS at week 37.  She said that if I have any bleeding or strong contactions before then I will have to have an emergency CS.  So in my situation, she has put me on a stricter bedrest in hopes that I can incubate my LO through 34 weeks when she's more "out of the woods", but were praying to hang in there until week 37.  Very scary.
