Tips for jogging with baby?

My DD is just over 7 months old, but isn't much of a fan of going on jogs with me.  We have a jogging stroller, but she doesn't usually last very long in it, before getting fussy.  (She loves going in the backpack for walks, just isn't a fan of the jogging stroller I guess).

Does anyone have any tips on ways to help her enjoy the stroller a little more?  I've tried including some toys for her to play with, but this don't entertain her long enough for me to get more than a mile and a half in.  As a side note, it seems to get worse if she turns around in the stroller and she's me, she then wants me to get her out and hold her, so I try to stay quiet and out of view.....I'm starting to think this is just the way it's going to be and I'm not going to get much of a workout until she's a little older.  :-(

  • Thats exactly around the time, my daughter started to go crazy in the pram as well.

This is what I tried and sometimes worked.  Because I was able to, as soon, as she woke, I would go.  Fresh diaper / me changed of corse - but I would put her in, give her a bottle of water and some snacks and go.

As well, I always always always brought her ergo carrier so after 30-40 mins (or however long), and she started to become un enthused with the scenery, toys, books, snacks....I would put her on my back and continue.

Often I would also find that if I ran/walked to a park - after 20-30 mins of her sitting it was like a lovely reward!!!! And we would get out and ist in the grass, play, give her a feed (I was still breastfeeding as well) or I would grab a coffee and we would cuddle and just watch the world go by.

Its difficult for you and them, be casue we have an agenda to stick to work out, timings, etc, and they just dont want to ALWAYS be told what to do ALL the time.

It was annoying at times, but I would just stop breath and put her in the carrier (she woudl SCREAM her head off) and continue.  Or park play (and sneaky workout lunges, squats, push ups) and let her explore the grass.

    Its hard, but completely atainable!

    Good luck!

  • I bring anything and everything to distract her. I can usually get in a good 40 minute run, the first 30 minutes she's great and then she gets fussy. I give her my keys (there is a whistle on my key ring and she loves blowing that and making noise!) Water bottles with a little bit of water left in them are great (she shakes them), and sometimes I sing to her as I'm running, like fun upbeat songs that we usually listen to in the car.

I don't make park stops because it's so hard getting her in/out of the stroller, and I don't want to deal with a tantrum and have a 15 minute run home.

  • DS eventually learned that jogging stroller=nap time.  We've been running together since 5w pp, but for a little while at first he would just scream and scream (I got some interesting looks from other runners and bikers  lol)

Maybe try to go running at LO's normal nap time.  If she falls asleep in the car, she should be able to fall asleep in the jogger.  Just keep running until she nods off  lol  Even on the days DS doesn't seem tired, I know that he isn't going to be able to fight a nap for 6 or 8 miles  lol

Even if he's not tired, he does much better if he just woke up from a nap.  So maybe try running after nap time too.

Also, is she sitting in the stroller or still in her carseat?  Try keeping her in her carseat.  Maybe there's too much movement that's jostling her around.  I kept DS in his carseat while running until he was like 9 or 10 months old.  6 months old is the youngest most recommend, so at 7 months maybe she just isn't ready to sit on her own yet.

Maybe she's too warm or too cold.  I've had to strip DS down to his diaper before because I've over-dressed him.  Again, got some interesting looks but at least he was a happy camper  lol

    Good luck!
