3rd Trimester

To buy a breast pump or wait?

So I know I want to breast feed and pump eventually but I am still debating on when to buy a pump and what kind I will actually need there are so many choices. Any one have any tips? I did take a breastfeeding course but the teacher didnt focus on pumping at all.

Re: To buy a breast pump or wait?

  • I would wait. Quality breast pumps are expensive and non-returnable so if bf'ing doesn't work out you will be out 100-300 dollars. Once BF'ing is established and you decide to pump, then invest in one. Medela makes the best if you need a good one.

  • I bought a Medela PISA. I haven't opened it yet, just in case BF doesn't work out.

  • I bought a PISA as well... we'll see!
  • I agree with waiting until BFing is established. You don't want to be out all that money if it doesn't work out. This is what I plan on doing anyway.

  • I had my pump ready to go. My nipples were totally tore up and I used the pump in the beginning. Ds lost a bunch of weight and we had to supplement with formula. Anyway it was really nice to have, sure I could have rented one but it was nice to have mine. My milk took forever to come in!
  • I would definetly buy one before the baby comes. You dont know how and when or why you will need it and you want to have it available if you need it. Coming from personal experience, I would have been screwed without mine and I probably would have given up on breastfeeding.
  • I bought an Ameda Purely Yours. I kept the receipts and don't plan to open it until BF'ing has been established. I'll bring it back if it doesn't work out. This pump came recommended over the Medela models by the lactation consultants who taught our BF'ing class. It's a little more expensive than the Medela, but it's just one step under the pumps that many hospitals rent out, and I liked that it was a closed-system pump.

  • Well, I had mine ahead of time and I'm really glad I did.  My milk came in at day three, and DS was still having some latch issues.  I was able to pump while I got the issues resolved. If you don't want to buy yet, i would consider renting until you decide if BF works for you or not.

  • i have the medela PISA. i'm pumping an hour after the first morning feeding to build up freezer stash for when i go back to work. i hate pumping though, makes my nipples so sore! i'd much rather nurse her.
  • My LC suggested we get one before hand.  That way we can use it to help bring in our supply or relieve us when we are full.  I plan on saving some as well for when I'll be gone or if my nipples are in too much pain.  I plan on getting a Medala single pump.

If you don't buy a pump before your baby is born, I'd recommend seeing if your hospital rents pumps so you know you'll have something to take home with you.  I wouldn't have made it breastfeeding my first if I hadn't had a pump around when he was a week old and I had a horribly cracked nipple on one side that needed a break from him for a couple of days.
  • you can return if unopened, i am planning to get one
  • Most people recommend waiting... you don't know what you will be able to do / want to do until you are there, and you may have a better idea of which one to buy only once your milk comes in.

  • I would recommend getting one ahead of time. I have never went through it myself yet, but when my sister had my neice she had a really hard time for the first couple of days and had to send her DH out to buy one at the last minute. They ended up just getting what was available around here and not the model etc they would have wanted to get if they were not needed it right that minute. She was then able to pump while she waited for a lacatation consultant to come and help get them better established. From then on she had no problems at all but still used the pump a lot for nights she wanted a couple of drinks or was going out, etc. She highly recommended to me that I had one ready to use before the baby arrives or there is a good chance that I will give up on breastfeeding. (Or as PP said you could ask about renting one).
