When Did You Take LO Out In Public

I need out of the house.  My pediatrician told me to wait till she is 8 weeks.  It's so hard to be cooped up for that long.  I keep suggesting to DH maybe we can go do something at night when no one is out, but he won't give in.  How long did you wait to take LO in public?  When you took LO out did he/she end up getting sick?

  • We took him to Target at 5.5 weeks. That was it. At almost 7 weeks he got his shots so we were able to take him out before 8 weeks.

  • um we took him out when he was 4 days old.. we went to target.. and he hasn't gotten sick

  • 8 weeks? Holy crap, I would lose my mind. I think that's a little extreme. We took DD to Wal-Mart and out to eat a few times starting at 2 weeks.
  • 4 days. Picked up a friend from the airport and stopped for lunch on the way home.

8 weeks without taking the baby out?! I would have gone nuts.

  • We got out of the hospital on Sunday around noon, and were in church with her at 6:30 that night. She went to 3-4 large family functions/parties in her first 2 weeks of life, and we ALWAYS go out at least once a week to get out of the house.

Your pedi probably said 8 weeks because that's when your LO will get her 2 month shots, but honestly I think it's totally up to you. Don't bring her around really sick people, but really if you just go shopping for the day chances are nobody is even going to touch her.

  • Just don't go anywhere where there are a ton of people and don't let anyone touch her. It's flu season so just be careful around anyone who seems sick.

We went to target when she was a week old. We had her in her stroller and kept a receiving blanket over her carrier. This one chick and her 3 kids asked to see and I just looked at her like she was nutso.

  • yesterday we had lunch at a restaurant before his pedi appt and today we went to target.  8 weeks seems harsh.

  • I took my baby to Walmart the other day. Most people were respectful that he was a new baby and didn't try to touch him. I think I would have smacked their hands if they tried. Hehe.
  • our pedi said it was ok as long as we watched like a hawk so no one would touch him.  he said most ways babies get sick are by touch, not really air borne.  do not coop yourself up in the house for 2 months...I just wouldn't have any "play dates" or have your LO around other kids either.  (think sneezing, etc.)

  • I am so jealous.  Our pedi said usually he tells ppl to wait 6, but since it's flu season to wait 8.  I'm about to go crazy though, so maybe I can talk DH into taking us out.  I'm not one to stay at home all the time, so being here is starting to make me depressed/crazy.

  • We took our DD to my H's work not more than two hours after we got out of the hospital. We visited my mom first on the other side of the hospital. I take her out as much as possible. I think she has my immune system because she hasnt gotten sick yet.

  • We started outings @ 4 days.  We even drove 6 1/2 hours one way to see my family @ 2 weeks.  We've been to restaurants, stores, friends' houses and big family gatherings.  We go somewhere most everyday, especially when DH was home we took day trips to take the most of his vacation time (like walking around parks and to the beach).  He also goes on a 2-3 mile walk with me daily, weather permitting.  I wear him whenever we go places so people won't touch him.  He's been fine.

  • we've taken her out probably when she was 3 weeks? now i take her everywhere with me. we've also had tons of visitors. i told everyone to get their flu shots and whooping cough vaccinations (going around where i live). obviously no sick people allowed. i'm a germaphobe so i'm constantly using hand sanitizer and washing my hands. i can't stay home for too long. i'd probably get PPD.
  • I'm sorry, but that's an insane idea to keep your LO in your house for 8 weeks.  I would ask my pedi if I would need to bubble-wrap the baby, too!  =)

My DD was 8 weeks just yesterday.  I cannot even imagine not going out until then.  I would have hurt myself.

We took out DD to CVS when she was about 2 weeks old.  Then we started adding other things - Target, grocery store, Costco, etc.  At 5 weeks we drove 12 hours up to Washington to be at my sister's wedding.  That meant DD was out in Seattle air.

I've gone to meet up with friends multiple times and they have all had the chance to hold DD.

We've just avoided letting people touch DD when out (we usually wear her), and we wash/use hand sanitizer after we've touched things.  We already got our flu shots (just last week) so we're trying to protect our DD that way.  You will go insane if you stay home all the time.

  • We brought DD to Carter's yesterday at 13 days. I plan to travel out of state to visit friends and family before 8 weeks. I would go crazy if I didn't take her out until 8 weeks.

  • What is your MD's rationale for keeping LO in the house for 8 weeks? That sounds a bit ridiculous/parsnoid unless baby has pre-existing problems or was premature. My twins were born on a Thursday, discharged from hospital Saturday and we were out and about Sunday for Canadian Thanksgiving. We've taken them out a few times since then. Short outings but outings all the same. They're still living and aren't sick.

  • we went to papa ginos today.  LO is 5 days old!!  I have never heard of staying in for 8 weeks.  that is ridiculous to me!!  I would be out tomorrow doing something.
  • In the first 3 weeks, we stuck mostly to walks around the block or a short stroller ride at the mall (covered up).  This past weekend, we took her to a Fall Festival in the Moby so no-one would touch or get close.

The more we take her out, the easier it seems to get... no problems yet!

  • That is completely insane unless there is some immune system issue.  This is really old school advice that I would put in the same category as rice cereal in the bottle.

  • Oh geez, we've been to Target and to BRU this week.  We've also gone outside for a walk every day.  There is no way or reason I would stay in my house for 8 weeks.
  • Holy crap, that would drive me absolutely crazy.  There is no possible way I would be following that advice.

I took LO out every day - restaurants, shopping, work, etc.  And I passed her around the office and around DH's office at 4 days old.  Taking out baby =/= baby getting sick.

If you are formula feeding or have a preemie, you might want to be more conservative.

  • we've been doing outings since the day after she got home from the hospital. we are also doing playgroups.. i dont go crazy and let sick people touch her, but honestly..im not going to be one of those crazy moms who stays in her house and lets no one touch her child.
