Sometimes I can't believe how much some of you pay your babysitters...

Because around here, parents demand a lot and pay next to nothing.

I just saw an ad on our local Craigslist for a family looking for a nanny with very specific requirements including a MINIMUM of a bachelor's degree. They want:

"1. A minimum of Bachelor's degree. In a field related to child development and/or education a plus
2. Experience caring for children with ages 10, 4 and 2 years old
3. Natural care giver who can easily and naturally engage children
4. A genuine respect for and love of children that doesn't rely on heavy handed approach
5. Intelligent and fast learning
6. Hard working and impeccable work ethics requiring little to no supervision
7. Excellent time management skills and can work efficiently and effectively
7. Flexible personality and easy going, calm and sunny disposition
8. Comfortable with high expectations and standards
9. Has knowledge and experience in cooking, cleaning and possesses other domestic skills
10. Able to accommodate occasional overnights and trips
11. A minimum of 1 year commitment and a longer term commitment a plus
12. Must be in good physical and mental health
13. Must be able to pass a background check
14. A good car in working order for transporting children and running errands"

So they want a college educated person to cook, clean, provide childcare, be available for overnights or trips, and have their own nice car to haul the children around for get this: $8/hour!

And sadly, they'll have many people clamoring for the job. Can you even imagine?

  • $8/hr & a bachelors degree are they smoking crack?

  • where do you live?  I don't think I could find a teenager for $8/hr here????
  • It's all COL, I suppose. You couldn't get that where I live, but you could get someone with numbers 2-9 for $9 or $10. Overnights would be harder as would a yearly commitment. But 12-14 wouldn't be a problem either.

  • I made 7.50/hour babysitting when I was 16 in 1992.  It was an upscale NYC suburb, but an 8/hour wage for someone with those qualifications in 2010 anywhere seems unbelievable.
  • COL living here is relatively low (although our town does happen to have the highest COL of our particular state.) Even with a low COL, you're going to pay at least $900-$1000/month rent for a reasonably decent two bedroom apartment- not all that luxurious or new, but not the trashy ones either. Try affording that on $8/hr.
  • Wow.  I can't believe they expect all that for $8?! We pay $15/hour and that's pretty standard.

When I moved to CT to be a nanny, I was live-in, worked 7-7 every day, had to drive my own car (insure it and all that, they gave me $20 a week in gas), shopped for groceries, cooked dinners, did laundry, ran whatever errands needed and I was paid $200 a week.

    How long ago was that?

  • Our babysitter is 13 years old and we pay her $5 and hour.  I can't imagine requiring a bachelor's degree to entertain a couple kids for a few hours.
