Houston Babies

Jack & Jill test??

Has anyone heard of this? A girl at work had it done. They just draw blood and can determine the babys gender to 98% accuracy. Apparentlt it is only done in Houston. I was going to ask my OB about it tomorrow but wanted to see if any of you knew of it or about it and how the whole process works. Do you do it at OB or at the testing center etc? TIA!!

So did you have tp do the NT scan to do it? I dont think I want to do an NT scan. Do you call them direct or do it through your OB? I have an OB appt tomorrow and thought I might call them on the way but didnt want to sound like an idiot with no clue. :)

  • From what I've heard if you want insurance to cover it you have to do it with the genetic testing.

If you want to pay for it out of pocket you can, I'm not sure how much that costs.

  • Hi! :)

I had it done at the Center for Medical Genetics at 13 weeks. My doc said they've never been wrong for any of her patients. It's pretty crazy that you can know the gender with just a blood test! I think a lot of the people we've told don't believe us!

  • Just saw your other questions - we got it done (for free) along with our first-trimester screening. When we were in the waiting room, I heard the reception answer several calls of people asking for the cost of the gender test. I think it was like $150 or $120. You won't sound like an idiot if you call. :)

  • We did it for both boys at the Center for Medical Genetics at the same time we did our 1st trimester screening. When I was scheduling my appointment for this baby, the person on the phone had to check her list of OB's whose patients receive the test for free.

This. It was free with the NT scan.

FWIW, I asked the u/s tech and the OB about the accuracy. The OB told me she'd never have one be wrong. The u/s tech told me it was pretty definitive with the boys, and about 90% with girls, which sounds accurate to me.

They're testing for the presence of the Y chromosome in your blood, since there's some crossing the barrier between baby's blood and yours. Since the absence of something isn't definitive it's less accurate for girls. We didn't tell anyone until we had visual proof from the anatomy scan.

They told us the same thing. And the tech said that it was less accurate for second time mom's who already had a boy, because they already had the Y chromosome in their blood. The tech (or maybe the counselor) said that 20 week ultrasounds are usually about 80-85% accurate, so we're pretty comfortable with our results. We'll see in a few weeks! :)

  • I got mine done with the genetic testing on Monday and am waiting for the results of both the gender and genetic testing.  It takes 7-10 days to get the results back.
  • Is the NT scan the thing they do at 12 weeks to check for Down's and Trisomy indicators?

Yeah... it's an ultrasound that they take specific measures of specific areas, combined with the quad blood screening.

  • I got a free one with my NT scan as well around 12 weeks. It was accurate :) The tech said it's more accurate than an ultrasound.

Thanks. :) All of these acronyms are new to me! I have that test coming up, hopefully they can do the gender test too!
  • I had both test done there as well!

It's great if you are a planner:)

Also...they said 7-10 days and of course I called every day to check the message.  It was past the 10 days so I called my doctors office to see if they had gotten results.  They said they had the results after 3 days!  So....if you do go there, try calling your doctor directly to get results because I don't think the genetics office ever did put my results on the message service.
