Pink Eye- in adults.

I have pink eye. And I am so mad about it!!! Gah, I had the BEST weekend planned!!

Anyways, I haven't had this since I was like 8. Does anyone know if I need to see the Dr.?

Any home remedies?

Please pray my boys don't get it either.

Grrrr... I am a grouch now.

  • Oh no!  I take back my hug from last night.  Stick out tongue

Maybe Tosha will pee in your eye for you.  That should do the trick.  Honestly, I don't know.  I've never had it; but I would think that it warrants a call/trip to the dr's office for antibiotics (assuming it's a bacterial strain).

  • It should go away on its own in 1-2 weeks.  WebMD says:

If the pinkeye is caused by a virus, the person can usually return to day care, school, or work when symptoms begin to improve, typically in 3 to 5 days. Medicines are not usually used to treat viral pinkeye, so it is important to prevent the spread of the infection. Pinkeye caused by a herpes virus, which is rare, can be treated with an antiviral medicine. Home treatment of viral pinkeye symptoms can help you feel more comfortable while the infection goes away.

It says you should stay off work for 3-5 days so you should tell your hubby that you need someone to watch the boys and since it is contagious it might be best if you go somewhere fabulous while you recover Stick out tongue

ETA:  You can put a warm washcloth on your eyes for a little relief.  I would put a call into the doctor to see what they say.  They might just tell you to wait it out but if you wear contacts you might need some kind of treatment.  If you do have contacts I would see if you need to replace them.  I hope you feel better soon!

  • I had pink eye a few months ago.  I had to stay home from work because it's really contagious.  I went to the Dr. and got some antibiotic eye drops and I was better in a day and able to go back to work after being off for only one day.

I wear contacts mostly and had to leave them out for a few days while I was using my eye drops.

  • I had a very bad case last year about a month after I had my wisdom teeth removed, I think my immunities were down because I had a rough recovery, and then the pink eye was so severe I couldn't keep my eyes open and had to see an opthamologist :(  Mine was viral, so I had to ride it out and just use eye drops for moisturizing basically, because the antibiotic drops one of the hospital docs prescribed for me were not working.  It sucked.  I have had a case in college and it was not bad - just make sure you wash your hands all the time and be extra cautious not to be touching your eyes or rubbing them.  If it's only in one eye be particular about not touching the other eye.  I feel for you!!!

  • I got it in college and I was super pissed.  I told the doctor "I thought only little kids got this!"  In any case I got some drops and it was better quickly.  maybe your doc will just call you something in so you can take care of it right away and hopefully the boys can avoid getting it from you too :0)

  • I had this a couple times, it sucks.  If it's bacterial, you will need to get some antibiotic eye drops.  If it's viral, it will go away on it's own.  I would get it checked though, mine got really bad and I couldn't even keep my eye open, and like pp said its really contagious, so keep your hands washed and away from your face, and don't let S and J touch your face.
  • I'd go see the dr.  In fact, I did go see the doctor when I had bloodshot eyes (I guess from allergies) because I was freaked that I had pinkeye because my eyes never get bloodshot.

Anyway, after you have a couple doses of the drops (if it's bacterial), you should be good to do your fun weekend plans.  DD has been allowed back at daycare the day after starting eyedrops - and you should notice a lot of improvement too.

  • Go to the doctor sooner, rather than later. I had it a few years ago and didn't go to the doctor and it got so bad my eye became fused shut with goo for several days. I felt like someone was rubbing sand in my eye 24/7. It sucked big time.

    Good luck!

  • Dang Melissa, I hope this doesn't throw a wrench in your plans.. I'd get to Dr. ASAP. Take care sweetie!

  • I usually don't post, but I have had pink eye MANY times throughout my life.  I think that almost every time I have had it, I have had to go to the eye doctor for drops to clear it up.  I remember one time I kept putting off going to the doctor and the pain just kept getting worse.  I ended up with scar tissue in my eye because I let it go for so long.  If you don't see any improvement, I wouldn't wait to have an eye doctor to look at it.

Also, when I was working at a daycare we had an infant that developed pink eye during the course of the day.  His parents took him to the pedi and was given drops to help clear it.  However, the pedi suggested that the next time he gets it that she could put breastmilk in his eye and it should clear it up.  I mentioned putting breastmilk in my nephew's eye to my SIL once when he had it when he was an infant and once when he was about a year old it cleared up the pink eye overnight.  I don't really know if it works in adults, but I thought I would suggest it since I had never heard of breastmilk helping with pink eye before.

Hope you get some relief soon!

  • Make sure you throw away any make-up brushes you've used on your eyes over the last few days.  My pink eye came back a week later because of this.
