2nd Trimester

Anyone still having fun running?

I am at almost 21 weeks and still runnning 4 to 5 miles a few days a week.  How is everyone else doing, is this normal, if so how much longer do you predict I will be able to keep it up.  I really like getting out in the fresh air and putting some miles behind me.

Re: Anyone still having fun running?

  • I was doing a 4-mile run 5 days a week up until 2 weeks ago. At that point, I was feeling uncomfortable during the run, and then REALLY sore in the ligaments like an hour later. Now I'm just doing it as a walk - with a LOT of jealousy of runners I see out in the mornings as they pass :-) Hope this helps...

  • Ha Ha running?  The only exercise I get is yoga.
  • You're awesome. Running sounds like absolute torture right now. I'd probably have to call DH to come get me halfway around the block!!
  • I can barely walk without wanting to die.  I admire your ability!
  • I kind of knew it would be short lived but I am going to take advantage of the next couple of weeks and then be right there with all the walkers...

     Thanks for your responses...

  • Ya never know - I had a parent of one of my students who was able to run slowly up until the day before she delivered. You could just be one of those lucky and genetically blessed people.

My doc said there was nothing wrong with running as long as I could... Good luck!

  • I'm still running but only 3 miles 4-5 days a week.  I haven't noticed a difference between how running was aroud 20 weeks and how it is now.  If you haven't already, I strongly suggest getting a support belt - makes a big difference.

I plan to keep on truckin'!

  • WOW. I am really, really impressed! As long as you feel okay, keep it up.

  • What is a support belt?
  • I just walk and do the elliptical at the gym.  I'm not allowed to do aerobics or run because it is too much bouncing and every time I did it I spotted, so my doctor told me no more.

  • The only thing holding me back is the constant urge to pee. I have been trying to do as much as possible. I don't think you will have to stop running...maybe just decrease the intensity.

You can buy a support belt at Babys R Us or on Amazon. Just google maternity support belt. I haven't bought one but may still do so. I need some maternity running clothes too.

I ran this morning and because it was a little chilly I started with a long sleeve on. Later I took it off and tightly tied it under my belly. This helped add some support (for free!).

  • I'm still running 3-4 days a week anywhere from 2-5 miles. I'm only 19 weeks  but as long as I slow down, I'm okay.

As for keeping going throughout the pregnancy, I'm on an all-pg relay team for the Detroit Marathon tomorrow and everyone else is farther along than I am. One girl doing the 6 mile leg is 26 weeks (I think..maybe 24?) and the girl doing the 3 mile leg is two weeks from her due date--she's walking, though!

  • I am still jogging about 3 miles, 4 times a week and I am a week and a half from my due date. It can be done! The only thing getting harder is the swelling in my calves - that's all that is uncomfortable for me. I have heard a lot of women jogging until labor starts. If you are doing what you are now, then I would say there's a good chance that you could still be jogging very close to your due date. I have had a very easy pregnancy, and I think part of it has been staying active.
  • I'm not running for real but I'm still playing soccer 5 days a week with my team.  I like it, and my doc said it's perfectly safe (and the girls are very careful!)

My sister was still running 3 miles a day until about a week before she delivered...she's an ob and seemed to think that was fine.

"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
