H needs to have minor surgery - please share experiences with surgery/recovery with LO

First of all it's not a huge deal at all but she has to be put under general anesthesia which is the scary part.  When she was born she had a white bump on her neck near her collar bone.  It looked like a pimple with a whitehead.  The pedi said we could have it checked out when she was a bit older unless it got worse.  When she was about 3 - 4 months old it became totally flat and there is just a tiny (size of a pinhead) dot to indicate where it is on her neck.  It has flared up twice in the past 19 months and it just gets red and a bit raised and goes away again in a few days.  It is SO small that I just looked for a recent picture of it and even when I zoom in on the picture if you don't know right where to look you can't see it.

At her 18 month check up the pedi suggested we get it checked out by a pediatric surgeon since it had flared up.  It was diagnosed as a branchial cleft cyst.  Bascially during her 7th week of development as a fetus one of her branchial clefts didn't totally close leaving this cyst on her skin.  It can become inflamed when she has an upper respiratory infection.  There is no additional complications from dd based on where it is located.  If it does become infected it will get larger and need to be drained and removed.  So the recommendation from the surgeon and our pedi is to have it removed now so that we don't have to deal with the complications of an infection later.  Since it goes deeper than the surface of the skin they can't just use a local to remove it.  They estimate it will take 30 minutes for the actual surgery.

So after talking with Dh we decided to schedule the surgery for next month. I know there are quite a few babies on this board that have had minor procedures that involved general anesthesia so I know I'm not alone. If you want to share the details of the length of the surgery/recovery and the recovery once you were home I'd really appreciate it!

  • Trig had hernia surgery when he was 7 weeks old and tubes put in his ears at just over a year old. Anesthesia makes toddlers kinda freak out so they'll want you there when she wakes up to help soothe her. Juice, crackers, etc are a good thing. She'll do great!!! Recovery for both of those procedures was a breeze.

  • DD hasn't had surgery, but both of my nieces have when they were toddlers. Both had tubes put in and the older one had eye surgery when she was about 3. My younger niece had a procedure that require anesthesia when she was a bit older (2nd grade-ish) The older one had no issues, the younger one freaked out with the anesthesia both times, but was fine after. My friend's little girl had tubes put in, adenoids removed, and a cyst on her neck removed all at the same time when she was 21 months. She had no issues at all when she woke up, other than a bit of pain.

My nieces both recovered very quickly and my sister had a hard time keeping them still afterwards (which was especially important after the eye surgery... my niece was literally trying to run in circles around the house when they got home). My friend's little girl was a bit irritable the day after the surgery, but that was it (they came over to visit because we had just had DD, and she probably overdid it a bit).

Good luck!! I'm sure it'll be harder on you than her!

  • E had surgery last week to fix his crossed-eyes. He was under for about an hour and came out ready to play:) Anesthesia effects kids in different ways so they prepared us for him to be really upset and angry, which he wasn't at all.

He was pretty sleeping the rest of the day, but seemed fine pretty quickly after (expect for his eyes, of course).  Good luck, I hope everything goes smoothly!

  • Jacob had an endoscopy when he was 9 months old.  He was put under general anesthesia for about 45 minutes.

We arrived at the hospital early in the AM.  He couldn't have breakfast, which was one of my biggest concerns.  But he didn't seem phased by it at all.  He was "admitted" to outpatient surgery and was taken into the presurgery center where he was given a short exam.  Then we met with the doctor and anesthesiologist who assured us about what the procedure was and how long it would take.

We then took him back to the OR.  They laid him on the table and started with a bag of oxygen and then added in the sleep agent.  I was right there with him and he did start to cry because he didn't like the thing over his mouth.  I told him that I was right there and that nothing was going to happen to him.

I think the absolute worst part was seeing his eyes get glassy and glaze over.  The doctor close his eyes and he was asleep.  It was so sad and I cried.

I left the room.  We got a cup of coffee and then they called us back because he was already awake.  They kept us in post-op for about 30 minutes to make sure that he was alert and would take a bottle and keep it down.

After that we took him home.  He took a LONG nap - like 3-4 hours.  After he woke in the afternoon it honestly was like nothing happened to him.  Like the morning had never happened.  He was totally normal.

I think the it will be the same with Hannah because she's going to be under for such a short amount of time.  She will probably not feel many of the ill effects from being under for a long time.

It will be hard to see her go to sleep, but she will be in good hands!

  • I don't have any experience with surgery for LO's...but I wanted to wish you luck with everything.  I'm sure H will do great!

And B has something really, really similar to this.  We had it check by the pedi, derm, and ENT and they all say it is fine unless it gets bigger or becomes red.  Derm said we could possible have it removed when she is a bit older (as in 10 or 11) because they would want to do a MRI first to make sure it wasn't connected to anything.  Now, I'm second guessing that...although hers has never been red and doesn't really change sizes.

  • Katie had tubes so she was under anesthesia.  She was pretty upset when she woke up and did threw up (which is really common) but by the time she got home it was like she never had surgery and was back to her usual happy self.  So it was overall pretty easy
