Tummy Sleeping?

I feel kind of dumb asking this question, but I will anyway.  Hadley doesn't like her arms to be swaddled so we put her in a swaddle with her arms out.  She is a great sleeper, but she tends to wake herself cause of her arms flailing around.

Last night ended up putting her on her tummy while I tended to Stella (she puked in her crib...yeah, fun).  Anyway, she seemed to be so much more comfortable so I put her back in the co-sleeper that way.

I know "back is best", but does anyone else let their little one sleep on their tummy this soon?  I would never have considered it with Stella, but I seem to be way more lax this time around.

Stella never slept on her tummy until she was several months old, but she also hated being on her tummy and Hadley loves it.

I guess I just want to see if anyone else does this.  Not sure I'll let her sleep like that again, but she seemed to really like it.

Re: Tummy Sleeping?

  • Yes. Hampton slept on his tummy from very early & still does. I started by putting him down for naps and just constantly (obsessively) checking on him. Once I felt a little more comfortable, he was on his tummy at night. We didn't swaddle (he HATED it), but used those zip up blankets. HTH :)

  • No way, never.  DS1 only slept on his tummy in the NICU while he was on the monitors and when he was home on our chest.  DS2 has way better head control and until he learns to roll over he will be sleeping on his back as well.

  • Ioften let jones sleep on his tummy for naps. I'm hoping he masters rolling soon so that we can talk transitioning to the crib because I don't want to attempt it until then. He just doesn't sleep well flat on his back ( he sleeps in a RNP)
  • I didn't, but I would think it would be okay for naps as long as you or DH is awake and checking on her very regularly.  I would not do it at night.

  • Jordana has been a tummy sleeper since about 3 weeks old, maybe 4 at the most. Brady started sleeping on his belly at month old!

This was exactly me. I would have never, ever considered it for Brady. But it was the only way Nolan would sleep. From about 3 or 4 weeks old Nolan has always slept on his belly. We kept his room cool, only a sheet in the crib nothing else, and white noise. He still to this day sleeps on his belly.

  • I know I will be much more relaxed the next time around too.  Ethan would only sleep on his belly but I didn't let him and I paid for it.  Next time I will let my baby sleep on their tummy if that's the only way they will sleep.  If you need more piece of mind buy the angel care monitor ($100 I think) that monitors breathing while babies sleep.  You need your sleep too, mama!

Ditto this.  My DS wouldn't sleep any way, and DD sleeps well on her back, so I haven't needed to have anyone tummy sleep.  I also would have been more lax if DD needed to - but I definitely would have had her on the angelcare monitor.  I wouldn't have been able to sleep at night if she were on her tummy!

  • E started at about 6 weeks, per a  suggestion from our pedi GI doc. It was like magic.

I did all the research and decided for us, the benefit outweighed the risk. IF you factor in all things, the risk is less than 1/2 of 1 percent higher with belly sleeping (That is from several studies that doctors and I went over together, I have no links to back this up)

  • In spite of being more relaxed this time around, safe sleep just isn't one of them.  I have and always will lay my LO down on his back, not his tummy.  Now he often rolls to his side and sometimes his tummy, but I always lay him on his back to start.  I also don't let him sleep with any loose blankets (we do Halo Sleepsacks), no bumpers, and no soft toys.

  • We had our boys tummy sleeping from about 2 months on.  I googled about SIDS and was completely worried, but they had good head/neck control, and slept so well and for so long that I just kept them on their tummies.  Of course now that they can roll over, they won't stay on their backs so it's irrelevant!  But it was hard at first, knowing we were going against recommended advice, but it has worked for us.
