3rd Trimester

If you could change professions...(NBR)

If you could go back and do it over again, would you choose a different profession?  I have been a high school French teacher for 10 years and I do truly enjoy it, but if I could go back and speak to my 18-19 year old self in college I would have gone into something in the medical profession (nurse, medical technologist, etc.).  I do have a Master's degree in school counseling as well but it is just about impossible to find a school counselor job in Ohio (even though I have been at the same school for 10 years).  It's all about who you know, not what you know apparently.

  • I'm a registered dental assistant, and I kind of wish I became a dental hygienist instead, or maybe even a dentist. If I could talk to my younger self, I'd tell myself to go to college right out of high school instead of taking 4 years off first. I so regret that!

  • If I could go back I would of finished High School. I am working on getting my GED, but I regret not finishing almost everyday. I have a good job that I love. I just think if something ever happens what am I going to do. I made a lot of bad choices as a kid and maybe if I had stayed in school then a lot of that wouldn't of happened. I don't regret the life I have now, just some of the decisions I have made, but they did put me where I am today so it couldn't of been that bad.
  • I am a registered nurse and although I absolutely LOVE what I do, the medical field has become too much about legal documentation and computer work rather than actual patient care. If I had to do it all over again, I would go into something that I could make my own hours (maybe Pampered Chef, Mary Kay, or Creative Memories - scrapbooking company)

I just wanted to say that your LO in your siggy is so darn cute!

  • I was pre-med in college and planned for a career as a doctor.  After some time away from the med school apps. to work after graduation, I changed my mind and went into nursing.  I'm currently in a nursing program and plan to finish a doctorate to become an NP.  Not really a whole change of field, but certainly a different angle of medical practice and I wish I knew when I was 18 that this was the way to go!  I have always desired a career in medicine, but sometimes I secretly wish I had a love for something entirely unrelated and more creative like advertising or art.  I am completely devoid of anything artistic or creative!!!
  • I have an associates in Interior Design, and didn't go on for my Bachelors as I had planned due to getting married and not wanting to spend the money on an education that I would only use till we had kids. :)

But if I could I would have completed my Bachelor's in Interior Design and gone on for a Master's in Architecture.

I found that finding a great job in the design industry with just an associates for super hard and ended up starting my own business. But that turned into just being a decorator and not doing all of the architectural stuff I had hoped to do in the beginning. Oh well. I am going to be a SAHM now so no biggie I guess.

  • I got my degree in illustration and English...now working as an editor and I definitely enjoy it and the art I do on the side, but I am seriously considering going back to school in a couple years to get a 2nd undergrad degree in biology and apply to vet schools. My college self would never have been convinced to do this, though...I believe sometimes you have to be out in the world and get experience to have a better idea of what you want your life to be.

He's growing up, but he'll always be my baby!

  • I was a social worker/therapist before SAHM, and yes, I wish I could change careers.  I would be a L&D nurse.  I wanted to be an OB back in the day, but I had a hard time getting through the classes, so I switched.  I always wish I could get a do over, but I would probably have the same difficulty with classes, especially now with kids and not enough time.

  • Patient safety

That was what I wanted to do after grad school but my job is so specialized that I am probably never getting out of it. It kind of sucks, but it's good because it makes me valuable to my company at the same time.

  • I am a school counselor.  I like it a lot and it fits my lifestyle (DH is Navy and we move a lot - so far I have easily found jobs everywhere).

In a perfect world without conflicts I would have gone to Medical School.  I did pre-med in undergrad, took my MCATs, etc.  But my husband and I are high school sweethearts and by the time senior year of college rolled around and we were still together it became apparent i had to choose.  He had graduated from the Naval Academy, was in flight school, and it was one of those things where I needed to choose him or choose medicine (being that it would be extremely hard to practice medicine and move every 3 years).  I chose DH (and don't regret it one bit).

REALISTICALLY, as soon as DH has gotten out of the military I am going to go get a second Master's in genetics counseling.  I like school counseling but don't feel challenged enough most days. I think genetics counseling would be a good way to combine my love for the medical/science field and my experience in therapeutic counseling.  I might do it before he gets out if we find ourself in an area with a good program and my kids are a good age.

  • I am a Licensed Acupuncturist & Herbalist. I love what I do & would still choose this as a profession, that being said I wish I had decided on it a little earlier. I finished my Bachelor's in Animal Science Pre-vet Med prior to my decision. (no real regret, but I could have knocked a few years off of my college run, not to mention $)

    ETA: oops totally lurkingEmbarrassed...hi ladies!

  • I have a degree in Theatre and I wouldn't change it.  But there are not too many professional acting jobs in Oklahoma City and moving to New York or LA is out of the question :)  I'm not in love with my current job (which has NOTHING to do with my degree).  I always said that if I made enough money acting, whether it be in Sheboygan or New York, I would be happy.  But...that's probably never going to happen.  I could have double majored in education so at least I could teach theatre, but teaching arts jobs are not easy to come by either.

  • I am a wedding and event planner and wouldn't change a thing right now. I absolutely LOVE what I do.

However, once the LO gets here, I may re think it all because it's VERY time consuming.

  • I am another one that LOVES my profession.  My undergraduate degree is in Accounting and I am currently finishing up my MBA in general management.  I have been an analyst (financial, business and sales) since I graduated from college, and I absolutely love it.  I learn something new all the time, and working with numbers is my niche!

  • That's funny.  Before I had DS, I was a teacher also (first grade) and if I could do it all over again, I might have chosen nursing, specifically pediatric.  Maybe some day I can go back to school to become a nurse.
