constipation from rice cereal...ugh.

hi everyone,

so now that mia is finally able to eat (thank god), the rice seems to be causing her bad constipation. she poops every day, but just a small, hard little poop. and she gets all red and seems to be straining (it started as soon as she started the new rice formula, so we're pretty sure it's related).

at a nurse's suggestion, we're giving her some prune juice and warm baths with baking soda, but no change so far. we're also seeing her pedi tomorrow. i'm just wondering if any of you have some insight or advice for easing constipation.

Re: constipation from rice cereal...ugh.

  • My DD was always constipated so the Pedi. actually told us to start with oatmeal cereal instead of the rice.  Pear juice worked wonders on her.  The Pedi. said basically any fruit that started with a P was good for constipation.  GL!  FWIW, she's still a constipated child...SIGH.

  • I would also suggest switching to oatmeal cereal.  And ditto the "P for Poop" on the juice.  We gave DS a little prune juice everyday to help with the consitpation, it seemed to work better than pear.

  • Ugh, we went through this to the extreme, it was awful.  Pear juice did help some, eventually they put her on a perscription laxative (enulose) and that helped a lot.
  • Ask your Pedi about Miralax.

I gave my daughter juice 1 to 2x a day every day....it didn't help- she was constipated all month.  we did 1 teaspoon of miralax in her bottle, and instant relief...a few feeds later.... and she went from being in pain, with hard, formed poop balls.... to soft stools.
