2nd Trimester

Anyone have red spotting in 1st tri?

I am pg (6w) with our 3rd after a m/c this summer and I have had red spotting on and off for the past almost 2 weeks. There is no cramping, pain, tissue being passed, etc. Just some days there is some red blood and others there is nothing. I am past the point that it should be implant spotting...I think? My OB won't see me until Monday for my 6w u/s and they said as long as things stay the way they are I don't need to come in. I was told this can be very normal. I had some brown spotting with my girls but not red. Just wondering if any of you dealt with red spotting in the first tri and if you ever knew why? TIA

Re: Anyone have red spotting in 1st tri?

  • Hi Tia, yes I did have some episodes of red spotting in my first trimester. I had brown initially (which they told me was leftover implantation bleeding), but then I got some red spotting on and off. I went to the Dr. and they said it could be from the cervix, which becomes engorged with blood vessels during pregnancy and therefore, more suspectible to bleeding. Activities such as sex, going to the bathroom, etc. can bump the cervix and cause it to bleed a little. I don't think you have anything to worry about, it is definitly normal & a good thing that you don't have any cramps. Hope this helps!

  • Hehe, sorry TIA is "thanks in advance" :-) My name is Kari :-)

Also, I forgot to mention that I did have my HCG and betas done last week after the spotting started and my HCG over doubled 48 hours later. I was told that's a good thing too. Keeping the faith until next week.

  • Just wanted to share that I had spotting that started at week 5, it was a mix of pink and red.  This lasted for three weeks.  I had an ultra sound done and they did not find anything wrong.  They told me I most likely had a sensitive cervix.  After the spotting stopped, I had two episodes of full on bleeds.  Had another ultra sound done and found a subchronic hemoriage.  I don't know if the bleeding and spotting were related.  I finally stopped spotting (and bleeding) around week 10 and everything is going great.  Try to keep your hopes up!!  Good luck!!

  • I had a subchorionic hemorrhage at 7 weeks and again at 11 weeks. I was a sobbing mess. I never felt the placenta pull away, hardly any cramping but there was no ignoring the amount of bright red blood that kept coming out. It was not spotting at all. DH heard me crying and opened the bathroom door to see the blood. He called the OB and she told me while the bright red bleeding could possibly mean another m/c there was nothing she could do until I was 20 weeks along.

Our baby is still hanging on with a strong heart rate and too busy to sit still. The ultrasounds showed the pockets of blood pooling around the placenta where it had pulled away and the tech advised if I had it twice so early on, that I would probably have it later on in the pregnancy as well. So we are keeping our fingers crossed that we won't.

If you're having spotting and it's sporadic, I would say you are fine. Still check with your OB, get the ultrasound and betas checked. The spotting can also come from the sac implanting further into the uterine wall. I had this happen at 10 weeks when I was pregnant last year with Emma.

  • I had bleeding and cramping at 7 weeks.  We had already been to the doctor and saw a heartbeat at 6w3d so I went to the ER thinking I was having a miscarriage.  I was bleeding so much I was filling pads and the cramping was terrible.  The u/s tech found the baby and heartbeat right away but I was sent home and told I was most likely going to miscarry.  The next day my doctor (RE) had me come in and they found a SCH which was the cause of the bleeding.  I had red bleeding for several weeks off and on.  It eventually turned to brown spotting and finally stopped around 12 weeks.  At my big u/s the didn't see the SCH anymore so we assumed it reabsorbed (which was our hope all along) and I haven't had any other issues with bleeding or spotting.

Good luck with your appointment.  I hope you get some answers!

  • I did, after straining with a BM (Zofran, sigh).

It stopped pretty quickly, and like you said I had no cramping or real pain. Just red blood.

It's so scary, I hope your u/s goes great. If you have anymore, or if there is pain, I would head to the ER just to be sure everything is okay. But that's just me.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks ladies!I did just call my OB again and she said as long as things stay the same we're gong to leave the u/s for Mon. I am not even filing a liner in a day, it's just mainly when I wipe that I see it. I still feel fine, no cramping, etc so let's hope t stays this way. Thanks again!
