Cloth Diapering

Anyone else fed-up with their front-loader?

We got our HE front-loader for efficiency but sometimes I wish I had a regular old top-loader for my CDs because I feel like I can't win the battle with ammonia...grr!  OK, vent over...

Re: Anyone else fed-up with their front-loader?

  • I have a front loader... had terrible ammonia smell with Charlie's Soap.  Switched to Tide Free and the ammonia is gone.

In other words, it might not be the machine, it might be your detergent.

  • I was actually just thinking the other day how happy I am with my front loader, I love it!  We've been CDing for a year with this machine (LG), using Charlie's soap and we very, very rarely have problems.    I use vinegar with every wash though, I've found that really helps with ammonia

  • I was using a HE for a while. HATED it. We don't have a LO, but I just feel like my clothes do NOT get clean.

But I REALLLLLY want one. :(

Do you put your vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser? or with the soap?  I'm having terrible ammonia smells too and using Rockin Green soap.

I do a Cold rinse/spin w/ about a 1/4 cup vinegar in the soap dispenser, my machine has a "water plus" feature that I use as well.  Then I do a hot wash with a tbs of Charlie's, "water plus" again and an extra rinse.  I have all BG 3.0's and this routine seems to work well for the microfiber, I've only stripped once in a year (and that was just last week)

THANKS!!! How do you strip your diapers with your HE by the way?  I have seen so many different 'ways' to do it, and I can't decide how to approach it.  I think I need to strip them first, thenf ollow up with the regular vinegar use above....  and I'm very jealous of your water plus option!

  • Just FYI - vinegar can degrade the PUL over time

I did just the inserts, 1 teaspoon of original blue dawn in the soap dispenser and roughly 1/2 - 3/4 cup bleach in the bleach dispenser on a Hot wash.  Then I did 2 additional Hot washes with nothing added at all.  They came out great!  You'll want to take a peek at your last wash, all of the bubbles should be gone, if you still have bubbles then you'll need to do another rinse or 2 until they are all gone.   You may want to throw in an old, wet towel to trick your machine into adding more water, I think the additional water really makes a difference.

I've heard that a couple of times, but I have been using vinegar in every wash for about a year and everything is still in great shape.  At this point I'm going to take my chances since it does such a good job keeping the ammonia away.  Hopefully they continue to hold up!
